Smoothing Bump Strips

Featured Replies

Finally picked up my wide mouth bumper off cntuning. Top bloke, will be paying him a visit again soon. Hopefully ;-).

Anyway, even though the bumper was in good condition ( it had a few stone chips. The usual ) it went straight in to be sprayed. While its there i thought i would take the time to smooth the bump strip. What a ball ache.

Got myself a medium and fine sanding block from halfords. Been at it about an hour and only managed to get the smallest bit smooth ish.

What has anyone else used to smooth theirs ?

Don't know now wether to die it black or spray it vw black magic ? Whatever i choose i will be doing back and door bump strips the same.

There was a pic I saw, think it was on a bora of a smoothed bumpstrip going straight across with no number plate recess looked really good

Sent from my Galaxy S2 not a Crapple!

best way to do it is to cut the tabs off the back of your bump strip, it will then sit flush in the bumper. plastic weld it in, filler small gaps, spray and its done. it wont crack either as its plastic welded.

I had my bumper strips de-textured so there nice and smooth and then colour coded black magic and I just removed the door mouldings completely, dont have any close up pics but you can see the front one on this pic

the way to smooth them properly is to give them a light key with a 320 grit, then a light coat of adhesion promoter, a couple of light coats of plastic primer then 3 or 4 good coats of high build primer, flat this down with some 800 grit wet and they will be glass smooth!

ok.. so were talking about smoothing the actual bump strips not smoothing the bump strips into the bumper. over on the mk4 forum smoothing bump strips means the latter.. dsmithmoblie.. your car is the best mk`1 on here imo.. fking love it! just thought id get that in!
