Independent tyre fitter in York and which tyres?

Featured Replies

I'm passing through York on Friday this week, Aug 24th, and need two new front tyres for my Octavia II. I'd rather not put my cash through the big nationals and wondered if there were any good independent tyre dealers and fitters that people could recommend? I live London but know York pretty well.

Also I've read through the vast number of mails on this forum about which tyres people suggest and it appears to be that just about every tyre comes up (with the exceptions of the standard OE). My main focus is quiet road noise, good safety and decent longevity. I don't have a performance car and am not trying to get the cheapest tyre possible. Suggestions welcomed (runs to cover)

Thanks,

Rob.

TBH I have always taken our cars to National Tyres in York.

They have always been very helpful and they are always very careful with my alloys not to mark them etc.

Plus often if you book and pay online you get a good deal.

They do the Barum Bravuris tyres which I have on now and they are very good and are getting some good reviews. Made by continental I believe. They are pretty quiet too I have noted. Much quieter than the cheapos that were on when I got the car.

Might not b any use to you but Knaresborough Tyre Services, Station Road Knaresborough, if you passing through or a day out.

Cheaper than the internet sites. Very good service, I won't use anyone else. Family Run Firm

Hope that helps.

Sorry Rob I know nothing about tyre fitters in York but I do know my racecourses in the North.

Just a reminder that York will be a nightmare for motorists between 10.30 and 1.30 and then late Friday as its the third day of the big

August meeting(Gimcrack and Nunthorpe Stakes day!).

Moss Tyres on Clifton Moor opposite the Vauxhall garage.

Thumbs up from me.

Wow, what a lot of helpful replies :)

I have a National Tyres in Greenwich, London who were the most unhelpful, awkward tyre company I've found in some time, e.g. when I went and asked about tyres they told me they had no idea what tyres my Skoda Octavia II had and couldn't find out as it was impossible to know and I'd have to bring my car there and then they might just possibly think about looking at it if scratching their arses was too complex. Pleased that the York branch is far more helpful :) Good call on the on-line stuff.

The Barums seem to be a value tyre (which is fine), not a brand I've ever heard of, but you're not the first to comment positively on them.

I know Clifton Moor and so will see what Moss Tyres can suggest.

Knaresborough is a little too far out of the way as a ) I'm travelling late Thursday and b ) have relation visits to make on Friday at various points of the day. To be honest, would rather go and visit the tyre fitters, but t'other half has spoken.

No idea about race tracks but was aware that York had some sand or something that donkeys raced around, thanks very much for the update, thankfully we're arriving late Thursday night circa 23:00 and leaving early Sat morning around 07:00. But good to know that it will be busy.

Give "Tech Tyres" on osbaldwick lane (near to B & Q) a try, they will match or beat any price in york. Good lads too.

National also wouldn't fit tyres you've bought elsewhere. They cite 'insurance reasons'. Probably different if you happen to know one of the mechanics there of course :wonder:

Moss tyres at Clifton moor for sure. I know Mark Moss personally.

I didn't want them to fit my tyres, I wanted them to sell me some tyres, ordinary round ones, nothing too special, and fit them for me.

Ian Brown's at Malton, only 10mins outside of York, always the cheapest for tyres I've found and good service

I've found Terry Elsey to be cheaper than Ian Brown's... that was last year though...
