Why did my piston crack?

Featured Replies

Could it have had anything to do with the exhaust being off the turbo for two hours or so of driving? The exhaust has no restrictions in it anyway but the studs off the turbo fell out causing the exhaust to fall off.

Recently had a turbo change as the old one went pop this piston cracked a day later... No evidence of any bits of turbo in the cylinder/head no valve damage or anything. Just a cracked piston. No marks from an impact in the head at all.

I need to know if I'm wasting my time putting new pistons in it if its going to happen again.

High egt's = cracked piston

Possibly having exhaust off

Or smokey map = high egt's

I wouldn't of thought it has anything to do with the exhaust, If the turbo was over spinning due to no back pressure it would damage the turbo.

Are you 100% sure you got all the broken bits of turbo out of the IC Pipework?

If you are I would say your EGT's are sky high and caused it.. What map was it on? and was it smokey? I know of another Hybrid Fabia vrs that is having a new engine due to a cracked piston.

Pistons crack due to heat, or I guess in addition to bits of debris getting in. I can't think of any other reasons at all.

No smoke at all, the map has been on the car for over a year. It's richard washbrook's map.

I don't work on my car but my mechanic said he had all the bits removed.

If your keeping it maybe get mapped tweaked and fit water meth?

Possibly extra heat from exhaust being disconnected? And not being able to dissipate the heat? Pass im not a mechanic

As stated before, pistons crack due to heat. Most likely reason for more heat...higher boost pressures. As you say it's been mapped for a while, it was probably the previous turbo putting undue stress upon the engine as it was dying. You replaced the turbo with a nice shiny, efficient one and the piston goes pop due to being overstressed.

It happens when cars get modified unfortunately. Higher bhp = more chance of pop :0(.
