Wind noise and leaking in when raining

Featured Replies

Hello my fellow Octavians:) had a trrip to Liverpool at the weekend, of course it was raining, noticed a dripping coming through the top of the drivers window, I had noticed a slight wind noise beforehand and hadn't really bothered me, however the dripping is a small problem to say the least........

Now I've checked the drivers door seals, all seem fine, it's a 57 plate VRS, so I wouldn't expect the seals to be perished, might be wrong, the window closes properly so I don't think theirs any issues their.

So my question is..... Has anyone ever had this problem? And can you adjust the door so it pulls it in tighter against the seal?, if that makes sense.

Any help much appreciated :)

Happy Friday !!

Mine was the same. I had to open the door, stand on inside of it, put my knee just under the window on top of door card and hands on top of door above the window, and pull the top towards me flexing it in, then try it and see if its flush and repeat if necessary

Honestly!!!, don't like the sound of that, sounds a bit risky, I've done the same sort of procedure to a transit van drivers door, any other things I can try? Is their no way off adjusting the door?

only other way is to shim out the bottom hinge, to bring the top in, then you may have dodgy shut lines.

The aa use this method to get into locked cars - bend top out insert wedge-open with wire contraption-bend back in

I wasn't doubting your method, and I'll give it a go tomorrow, I'll let you know how I get on :)

it is less than ideal but works, i just bounced pulling pressure on and off the door to tease it in, dont go mental and bend it to death its a softly softly approach. Worked on mine and hasnt come back out.

Obviously its your choice and responsibility, first check if the top of the door is protruding, if not your problem may be something else

It's the good old door seal problem. Mine did it after about a year from new but stopped when I had the seals changed. Design thing.

There you go then, door seals. Id go that way first matey

Only joking mate, don't think my joke worked as well as I thought it would, thought you may of took the bate and thought I'd popped the window will bending the door violently :)

However the Lofty79 method as I now call it worked a treat, went outside, door shut was out of line at the top, cracked on with the Lofty technique and hay presto after a blast up the a19 no noise, so I'am hoping theirs no leak :)

Cheers pal.... Shame my joke was s#it

Haha, no it was me who didnt read it properly mate, just read it back and it would have been funny had i not have been blinkered to problem solving.

Glad that worked mate, chances are wind noise gone means that if air cant get in - water cant either. Keep us updated bro, always like a happy ending  Is the shut line flush now or still a little out?

It's a little out, looks like its right on the top corner, but it's only a tiny amount, it's bound to be raining tomorrow and I'am going to have a drive round the lake district, so it will get the test then... If your around that way and see a random bloke bouncing on the drivers door of a black VRS, with a few asia bags instead of a window... It's just me doing a Lofty :)

cool, sounds like it may want another nip in, but if its dry...........leave it :sun: The pulling of a door in until air and water stay out is doing a 'Lofty'......The bouncing around and then black bagging your window will be termed pulling an 'adams'. :giggle:

Ha ha ha, fair enough it works for me, should be made a sticky in my eyes....... Maybe just the Lofty :)

Are you sure it's a leak at the top of the window and not the top of the door? I had an issue with water dripping through the top of the passenger door (09 Octy) which was solved by moving the striker plate up slightly.

I loosened the 2 star bolts (don't remove them as I have no idea if the nuts are captive or will drop to the bottom of the B pillar) and move it up a mm or 2. Marked the original position with masking tape so I know how much I'd moved it and also didn't move it in or out too much and upset panel gaps.

I'll see how the Lofty does today, if not looks at the seals and your method, thanks mate

It's more than likely the door striker needs adjusting, I got a pal that works in a body shop to do mine. It's not completely sorted but I reckon it's 90% fixed.

Are the door seal expensive to change? Is it a DIY job

I still have the smallest of drips, had about two drops in a 4 hr journey in pretty hard rain, so I'll try adjusting the striker, if that doesn't help new seal.

However the Lofty has got rid of the wind noise totally :) big up the Lofty massive, !!!!
