Coilovers or Lowering Springs and Shocks?

Featured Replies

Hi all, i want to lower my Octavia VRS, but i am on a budget. I've been looking on eBay for coilover kits and Ive found the Blueline JOM coilover kit,but ive read that they are not good ?

Ive also found this coilover kit on eBay, and was wondering if anyone has any reviews on these:

Also i dont know whether to opt for coilovers, as they are affordable, or whether to go for H&R lowering springs and KONI shocks. Ideally id like to opt for coilovers as they are within my budget, however id appreciate any responses to this thread, considering the coilover kit on the eBay link above.

Any replies are greatly appreciated :)

Opinions vary but having have cheap (VMAXX) and expensive (KWv3) coilovers I say you get what you pay for.

You'll probably get a much nicer ride on the springs and shocks but the coilovers are more flexible with the adjustable height.

Yaaawwwnnnn. There's a good 247 threads discussing it, have a wee search and you will get tons of Info. My answer coilovers

The coilovers in the link are the ones i have fitted to my vrs. They arent that bad, a little bit bouncy but as rob said you get what you pay for.

Follow loftys advice and use the search bar to get more info before you just go out and buy some

mine have been good, if you dont want the bounce lift it a bit, but i cant bring myself to do it

No neither can i, i was thinking about dropping mine some more. ;-)

me too haha......... maybe just maybe its less bouncy lower down :giggle: . Worth a try. I need shims to go lower though, as i already had to take engine tray off cos of incessant scraping, and my arch plastics are being used as bump stops

+1 agree 100%

Cheap is ok but when you have experienced the better coilovers and the less crashy ride and the ability to go loooow without issue the expense is well worth it. Would not trade my KW's for anything else TBH.

As above really buddy, I have gone from :

1. replacing just std springs

2. replacing shocks and springs to Koni FSD's and H&R -20mm

3. Weitec coilovers

4. KW coilovers

Konis were great on all round ride and comfort. But as i like my car low and wanted better adjustment KW win hands down.

If you want reasonable ride and not to go too low then a middle range coilover will be ok. It is when you start lowering lots as the cheap to middle range collies can't handle the rebound and you get choppy rides.

The top coilover on this site is probably Weitec GT's

For cheaper collies it is probably JOM or AP(although AP have shot up in price, these are made in KW factory as are weitecs, all same company).

As there is not a lot of choice of good tried and tested collies, so getting something like your ebay add is a risk.

true there are so many....but a lot just go into off topic stuff and not easy to get to the right answer. but agree searching is your friend as their is so little choice.

I think a permanent sticky on suspension choice and reviews should made like wheels, then you could get to it easy...

nearly done that a few times, Just lowered my KW's 4 turns at front and 2 at rear, so interesting ride. Had to put 8mm spacers up front to get tyres/wheels to clear platforms. A big improvement in handling. Also stiffened shocks up a tad to compensate.

Yeah platforms are rubbin my tyres just a tad, so 5mm spacers should do it for mine, wish i had kw money but for what i paid the value for money is superb - no doubt not as good as weitec or kw so i darent drive a car with them as i know ill hate mine when i get back in. However delighted at the minute, at least get 2 years out of em anyway

if your on a budget, personally i would go for shocks and springs, vogtland arent bad, and only a little bit more expensive than the (crap) coilovers you are thinking about. i got some from dpm for my a3 for £250 delivered. my mate ended up putting them on his golf and is very happy with them, not too crashy

edited out what i wrote because i responded not reading previous post properly

I have joms on mine and are quiet happyy apart from i dont think rear springs are heavy enough as mine are wound upto top and i still want to lift it more.

Had a ride to trevorb33 yesterday and his was alot higher than mine and i believe hes running weitec coilovers altho with the killer speedbumps round his I can see why
