New purchase, lots of potholes, stay with 15" or get a 16" - remap

Featured Replies

Hello Everybody,

Just purchased a Skoda Fabia 1.6 16V Elegance model 2013 Antharicte grey with black roof and black mirrors, we still have the 1.6 16V (105HP) on offer here in Lebanon (since I noticed it is not mentioned elsewhere)

our country has a lot of potholes and bumps, and my car was offered with 15" steel wheels.

I want to get some alloys and am wondering what kind of difference would it make to the car handling/pothole smashing if I get 15" alloys vs 16" alloys?? and if it is worth it to get from the showroom/main dealer or better to get it aftermarket ??

I have also noticed that the following are missing/not offered in Lebanon with the Elegance:

- rear electric windows

- rear reading cabin light

- Storage compartment on the top of dashboard is open

- (15" steel instead of alloys)

I was also offered a remap option for 15-20HP by the dealer (car will remain under warranty) is this a reasonable figure for this engine (achievable), is it worth the $$ AND can the car still be under warranty.

has anyone remapped their 1.6 mpi 16v engine?

Thanks

Hello,

So no one can tell me if they remapped their 1.6 16v engine? :)

What about fitting 205/50/16 rims? Does that affect ride height? More comfortable than 205/45/16 or?

Thanks

I don't think anybody on here would bother remapping a 1.6. Very little gains to be had for the cost. I'd be sceptical about the dealers claimed 20bhp! Maps are best left for forced induction engines where they give much better increase in power and value for money.

As for the wheels what size tyres are on the standard 15" rims? Larger wheels and lower profile tyres will of course make for a less comfortable ride over rough surfaces and potholes. If you fit larger alloys with a high profile tyre for better comfort then the rolling radius will increase which will affect handling and acceleration and also make the Speedo inaccurate....

Hope this helps!

This should help you as a guide to keeping the same rolling radius.

Where you buy the replacement wheels will have to be down to the situation where you are, price and what suits you.

Worth asking at a Dealer if they have take offs sitting available.

In general, if you were on 205/55/15 and went to a 16" wheel, you should be ok with a 205/50/16. Check using that calculator.

I would say that my Monte (on 17" wheels) is very crashy, but I don't know how much this has to do with the "sports" suspension and how much is down to the super thin sidewall 17" Dunlop SportMaxxxxxx tyres.

My dad thought his 1.9 TDI Fabia 3 was a harsh ride on 16" alloys, switched to optional 15" alloys on his 1.2 TSI. He says he hasn't noticed any difference, so has wheels that don't look as good.

all that said, more sidewall height should make it better against potholes, but it depends on how big they are - tyres can only shrug off so much!

Hello, thank you all for your replies :)

Current tyres are 195/55/15 so I guess going to 205/45/16 wld keep the tyre within the recomended %

I drive my GFs Skoda Fabia 1.6 16v (2012) she has those tyres (195) but with alloys the ride is very comfy, I think I can handle if its a bit less so on the 16". (My current is alfa romeo 156 2.0 TS on 16" 205/55/16)

As for the gains, what I think is missing from my GFs fabia is just a few more torques or the torques @ a lower RPM, donno how that'll work out if its possible.

What about cold air intake + free flow exhaust + remap, would the difference b noticable?

On a side note, I am trying to get my hands on the Monte black wheel arch+side skirt+etc to fit on my fabia :)

Thanks again
