Oil catch can

Featured Replies

Would a oil catch can help to reduce oil consumption on a mk2 fabia vrs?

No the purpose of a catch can is not to reduce consumption

It would if the oil came out ;)

It seems to be burnt off

It's helped on mine but I've completely changed the breather setup on my car.

no, it would catch the oil and then one could poor it back in but, consumption........ nope

Ok thanks for the replys

Depends - if the reason for high consumption is a breather system thats not allowing the crankcase pressure to sort itself out, then that could help or hinder things.

I'm aware of a recent breather change, but have no idea what its for (routing or breathing capacity)?

The reason for high consumption is the high crankcase pressusre forces oil out of the case through the breathers into the intake system thus being burtnt off in the piston.

From what I've seen and herd about the revised system is that a catch can is placed on the side of the big breather so any oil forced out of the crank case is caught in the tank. The other side is then fed back into the intake system so any vapour is burnt off.

This issimilartowhat I've done but mine goes to the atmosphere instead of back into the intake system.

If the reason for high consumption is excess crankcase pressure is worn rings than the oil will be forced past them as well as into the intake.

Venting the oil catch can to air reduces the oil vapour in the intake and can reduce knock since this vapour burns more readily than the fuel effectively decreasing the octane level, the downside is that the fumes are often smelt in the cabin and can make you feel sick after a while, it also increases the emissions the car is producing since the vapour is no re-burnt

I prefer a system where the catch can fumes are drawn back into the engine myself , this does separate some of the oil from the gasses but isnt as effective as a vent to air set up

Neither should be required on a road going 1.4 Fabia in my opinion its sticky plaster on a faulty engine

Well my car is booked in for three weeks for new pipes and then they will do another consumption test.

Its not just a 1.4 Fabia though is it. Its a twin charged engine. You don't get any fumes if you do it properly and run the vent pipe down under the car. I have no divider between the engine and the fan and I get no more oil or petrol fumes than when it was divided off with no venting.

So the twin charged really makes it that special? You won't find a vent to air catch can in any type approved production car

It should be required on any engine, the twin charged Fabia really isn't anything special it's not even working that hard
