Alternative rear tweeter trick help

Featured Replies

So I recently disconnected my rear tweeters in my Mk1 fabia as they were too shrill - particularly for how far back I sit as I'm tall!

However, thinking about it much more surely it would make sense to use resistors to attenuate the rear tweeters so that they still give some rear fill, as occasionally I think I am lacking a bit of the high notes 'surround sound' effect.

Having a browse of the internet, a lot of the American forums talk about L-pad resistors - http://www.ebay.com/itm/MOTOROLA-NOS-L-PAD-VOLUME-CONTROLS-PROBABLY-FOR-4-OR-8-OHM-USE-VINTAGE-RADIO-/261091447888?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cca435450#ht_500wt_1156

Basically it is an in-line volume knob that works to keep the impedance over the speaker constant so that it does not increase the load to the amp. However, these seem a bit awkward to get hold of in the UK and cost more than it would be worth. More discussions talk about just doing it yourself with resistors, one in the +ve line and a second that bridges the +ve and -ve before the speaker.

My questions are:

- Has anybody tried this?

- Would anybody be able to recommend the correct resistance ohms?

- Does it need to be in an L configuration? Or series? Or parallel?

Any advice appreciated!

Cheers!

Series or parallel will alter the impedance of the speaker line and could lead to either amp damage or lack of volume. Far better would be to dump the factory crossover network which is simply a capacitor and replace with a decent 2 way crossover. Simply doing this should improve the sound as the tweeter will no longer be getting audio which was really destined for the woofer.

Surely with the right combination of a parallel and series resister the impedance could remain unaltered?
