fuel consumption whilst towing

Featured Replies

Been on holiday to Cornwall and whilst towing my caravan the 370 miles each way trip I was getting 34 mpg.

I did not exceed the speed limits, I just stuck to 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on duel carriageways and motorways.

I wondered.what other caravan owners were getting to the gallon whilst towing.

I tow with a 2009 vrs tdi cr.

Thanks Mike.

With a loaded up 2.0PD towing 1,300kg my average was 28mpg at the same sensible speeds as above. I don't tow with it anymore though as I found it lacked grip and had a saggy back end affecting stability. Perhaps with a lighter caravan the mpg and stability is better but the car is rated at 1,400kg and I would not want to drag at that limit.

Tyres always pumped up before towing.

Speed the same getting about the same 33-35 mpg, only a light'ish caravan at 1,230kg. Hoping for a slight improvement, not yet got 6,000 miles on the clock. The big test comes on Saturday, will be towing to the Czech Republic so when I get back, will have over 2,000 towing miles, plus all the other mileage.

I got about 32 mpg from my 2.0TDi CR with only about 2000 miles on the clock. This was mixed A road and motorway with a lot of stop-start due to traffic.

It is a fairly small 4 berth that we tow with only me and SWMBO on board.

We tow a swift freesyle rated at a max of 1470kg with our 61 plate octavia vrs cr170 estate and we get 30 to 34 mpg depending on the type of roads, and the car has only got 4k on it (engine has Revo upgrade to 215 bhp)

No help for OP but for others...... I get just about 30mpg from my 1.8 Tsi 4x4 towing a small van about 1000kg.

Normally get up to 40mpg solo on a long run.

Thanks guys for the replies, seems that my consumption is about average then. Pleased with that considering my vrs has just clocked up 60k.

And good luck Yorkshire on the trip to the Czech Republic!

Damn you for towing with a vRS, let alone a caravan

Do you still get them big black spoilers that bolted on the roof off the car to help with the wind going over the caravan.

I tow a Bailey Series 5 Pageant Champagne with a 1.9pd Octavia which has been remapped for towing. The van weighs about 1250Kg. Depending on which way the wind is blowing (it does matter), I can get anywhere between 28 and 34 MPG when the caravan's on the back and 60 MPG without it on a run. August bank holiday driving home to Scotland from Grantham with the wind at my back the MPG was 35.6, the most I've ever seen towing as the wind was from the south. The A66 was not fun though!
