Spurious bulb light caption on dash, and iffy indicators?!

Featured Replies

I was driving home from work today when i noticed the bulb light on the dash. MFD said check 3rd brake light bulb! Got home got the missus to press the peddle so i could check the lights, to which all were working fine! Went on to check the rest of the bulbs, and again all appeared fine until i checked indicators. When i selected left or right, the indicator in the dash and relay were flickering at twice the speed. Went round my car to see which bulb had blown. NONE! What was strange though, is when i selected left or right, for the 1st (approx) 10 secs, is the rear indicator bulbs would stay on constantly, then start flashing at normal rate. The only thing i noticed was on the left hand wing mirror, the two inner most LED's were flickering faintly! Anyway turned the car on and off, with same results?

It was only till i locked my car, then unlocked it, turned it on, the bulb light on the dash had disappeared and indicators working fine  .

Has anyone got any ideas what this could be, just in case the indicator gremlins come back?

Thanks in advance,

Nighto

Gone are the days where you'd have a quick check of the fuses, earths and bulbs.

Modern cars are hugely more complicated.

When a fault occurs a fault code is stored on the car's brain. Reading this code should help to pinpoint the cause.

Most garages have the neccessary diagnostic equipment required to read the code.

Could it be the recurring problem of the washer pipe leaking in the rear N/S quarter panel all over the electrical connectors? Might explain the random 'bulb failure' issues.

Check the spare wheel well for screenwash, that is the normal giveaway.

In the old days, that'd be a stone cold banker that it's an earth problem but i'm guessing it could be anything nowadays!

Had a very similar problem on a mates octavia, turned out to be the wing mirror indicator led on its way out.

New leds fitted and he's never had the problem again (3 month ish now)

Thanks for your answers guy's much appreciated, i think JohnSTV6 could be onto something. Like i said in my original post, the left hand wing mirror LED's (inner most one's) don't seem to working correctly. I will monitor this and keep you informed. I think if it becomes a re-occuring fault i will go for the wing mirror LED's.

JohnSTV6, can you shed some light on how to remove the LED's for the mirror please?

Angle the mirror glass down, pull it out and off.

Disconnect the LED repeaters electrical connector.

Undo the two (or is it three?) Torx screws. Remove repeater.

Simples!
