I'm in trouble with the wimmin.

Featured Replies

Miss Ree is starting Uni in just over 2 weeks.

She's been using the Saxo I bought last year and loves it,, but I feel that it's going to be a financial burden sitting on the path now, never being used for weeks/months on end for the next 3 years, so I've decide to sell it at the end of the month when the tax runs out.

Both Mrs and Miss Ree strongly think I should keep it, so she can use it at Crimbo and Easter when she comes home, and of course next summer and onwards.

What do I do? Put me foot down and do as I think best, or bend for a quiet life?

Taking the car to uni is NOT an option btw.

Too expensive for parking, and too risky for trips out with her new found friends no doubt too.

Too ruddy far for the free breakdown service to be attending too.

If you have an off road parking area why not SORN it till Christmas and then re tax but only insure it for the short periods of use (keeping DVLA informed)? How much will it really cost to keep hold of against what you will sell it for and then pay to ultimately replace it when the moaning begings agains every time Miss R returns home?

If you sell it, you undoubtedly will be expected to be insuring her on one of your cars for the holiday periods as you won't want to be running her around to see her old friends every evening! It's up to you... But I'd SORN the saxo!

As above SORN

foot down, a car sat that long will invariably develop faults that will need fixed every time. Discs/pads will take the brunt - bearings dont tend to like it - engine top end drys out. Then short journeys fill exhaust with water and rots exhaust/cat.

I dont think its worth it, my friend had a polo 52 plate same scenario, never gave them any bother until it sat for long periods, then cost them a fortune

Might be worth having a look at the insurance options before deciding if the SORN option viable

Depends alot of value of Saxo, how much use your Daughter will make of car when home, what your public transport is like, etc.

Not possible.

On a serious note, get rid of it. As reliable and unburstable as the little TU lumps are, they don't like being left standing. Few friends found out the hard way.

Can she not pay for it/towards it?

Amen! Why does she get a free lunch? If i wanted a car at uni, or car full stop when i was that age i got a job and i worked to pay for it myself. Having a car is a privilege not a right!

She has been working all summer, until yesterday in fact.

She's paying for the insurance until the end of the month when it'll be cancelled (I assume...if it's going to be sold), and she 'feeds it'.

Technically it's not her car. It's on loan to her.

Getting mighty confused here as to what I should do for the best now.

Suppose I was expecting more "get rid" comments than this tbh.

If she pays to insure & run it let her do what she wants? :-/

Not her car and has been already mentioned, and do I really want a car sitting on the path not being used for months on end for the next 3 years?

If it fails to start in 3 months time, or has developed new faults in whatever dept., you can guarantee that The Royal Bank of Dad will have to pay for the rectifications.

your convincing yourself now. Get rid

youll be unpopular temporarily, but as you say bank of dad may need a withdrawal soon, so, funny how 'in the huff' turns into 'hi dad kissy huggy' yugh

Get rid.

A taxi everywhere as xmas and easter will still cost less than the fuel and insurance and have no extra running costs.

The tu engines doprefer a run outevery so often rather than being stood for months too

Indeedeedo.

The case is swinging in my favour here, and if it's ok with you's lot, may I quote you all?!

Been here done the maths, the friend sold the car and much better off without it. No worries about if it was ok or running costs.

If you're not using it twice a week or for a few decent journeys then it just doesn't stack up.

So quote away :)

zipcar / streetcar is perfect for this.

May be a while until you can get that anywhere outside London though.

And with that one sentence you know you're nearer to thirty and twenty is becoming a dim memory :giggle:

Yup, you can do whatever you like, just keep a little money aside for the next request, its a matter of time before its good books dad again. Just need to ride the rough.

Ahhhhhhhh buhbuhbuhbuh! I worked from when I was 13 simply to save up for **** I wanted... including a car. Worked all the way through uni to run it and buy a new one. And I'm definitely closer to 20 than 30!
