A question about 'load rating'...

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I wasnt 100% sure what the 91, 94, 98 etc numbers referred to on a tyre sidewall so a quick google search taught me it was the load rating of the tyre ie how much load it can safely take.

So two questions I still have, unanswered...

1, I presume 'load' simply refers to how much weight you are carrying in the vehicle, over that axel?

2, does that then mean the higher rated tyres have a stiffer sidewall ie a 98 would be stiffer than a 94 to take the additional load or is it not as clear cut as that?

Thanks in advance. :)

1. Its also the weight of the car, not just what your carrying.

2. The speed rating will also have a slight difference on the sidewall strength, but yes to an extent a higher load rating will have slightly stiffer sidewalls when compared to the same manufacturer. A 98 rated tyre by Michelin will have softer sides than a Bridgestone, the Michelin will provide less noise and more of a comfort ride, the Bridge will provde more more feel and will be more planted in the twisty bit's.
