poor mpg? on my Fabia 2 facelift 2010

Featured Replies

Hi all, i wanted to run something past you ...

I have the 1.6 TDI CR DPF (105 BHP)

I noticed after a long motorway journey (20-30 miles) my average mpg was down to 44.2

I did a reset of both MPG 1 and 2 display.

What i found was the opposite of what you would expect...:

round town my MPG is in the 50's and averages out around 54 mpg

on the motorway, my MPG actually starts to go DOWN and reduces the average to around 36-44mpg

Was very confused by this. My motorway driving is at bang on 70mph and not aggressive.

Is there something wrong with my fabia?

Using regular Shell fuel save diesel

Many thanks

i see the same on my green line II, stop start in traffic, mid/high 60's, if i do 65-70 on motorway on cruis high 50's low 60's

motorway best for economy and not driving to much like someone wearing a flat cap or blue rinse is 60-62mph, or sit in the slow lane with the lorries at 56mpg (i then get high 70's to mid 80's, so long as it don't do a regen)

fabia 2 seems to have aerodynamics of a brick / breeze block much over 60-65,

Not great fuel economy then,

& the Fabia's aerodynamics can not be that bad when a vRS can do better economy than that at 70mph

There are lots of threads on here about MPG with Fabia`s with the 1.6 CR TDi. How many miles has your car done? My fuel comsumption was very disappointing when the car was new. Now mine has done 23'000 miles it is much better. However, this engine definately likes long runs! On a really long drive, my car will do 64-70mpg at speeds upto 80mph ish. However at shorter runs it isnt so hot! Driving my 15 miles to work (when not using the train) I get it up to 50mpg but this involves driving up a long hill when the engine is cold and using gears. However when returning home, the journey is easier on the cold engine due to road layout and terrain, therefore I get upto 60mpg!

Hi threadbear, the Fabia has done 21600 miles now. It was an ex-demonstrator at a main dealer who i bought it off a couple of weeks ago.

The other MPG indicator, i.e NOT the average one, the realtime one, shows figures of 40mpg hovering up and down around that figure doing 67mph on the motorway in the slow lane. I just don't get it . Maybe its aerodynamics afterall......... :'(

when was it last serviced? did it have an airfilter change? if not change it, simple job 2 screws and about £10-£15 for the filter from dealer and 5 minutes always worth a try first

also the real time mpg can be a bit misleading as a slight incline has a massive effect on the mpg, use the average on the trip computer 1 as that will tend to be the current journey only and you will get a better idea of the mpg for a regular journey

i can tell you i average 65mpg on way to work ad 80+mpg on way home due to a hill that is steep one side (about 1 mile) and long slope the other (about 4 miles) and that it seem more efficeient to go up steep hill then all but coast down the slope than the other way

I've just returned from a 20ish mile trip, so not the total picture, but the journey runs thus:

40mph (1 mile) - deristricted (2 miles) - 40mph (1/2 mile) - deristricted dual carriageway (3 miles) - country lanes (1 mile) - 30mph (1 mile) - country lanes (10 miles) - 50mph (last bit).

This involves the odd hill or two, where the instant mpg drops to the 20-30 area in 5th, even shifting to 4th, the economy drops. A good mix of driving.

Average for the trip (according to Av Economy 1) was 55.1mpg.

Now, it seems to be that the car likes to "hyper-mile", but to do that in 5th, you need to keep it over 70, to allow some coasting. Drop towards 60mph and you need to row it along to get back to 70, denting the economy. It's a gearing issue. 5th is tall, 4th seems overworked for 60+.

My last tank average (measured, not indicated on MFD) was 48mpg and was pretty much all the above type of driving, with the odd few blasts as I was late for collecting the girls from school...country lanes, over 40mph, not sighted enough to change to 5th or you lose the power band.

I live with that mpg figure and know I'll NEVER see 67mpg, unless I drive a tank full (500 miles) at 70mph.

Thanks for the replies. The car was last serviced in February at 18,000 miles. For that price it may be worth changing the air filter anyway as you suggest?

The front two tyres are brand new, i will check all tyre pressure though tonight

:)

At a steady 70mph in light traffic once fully warmed up with the oil around 100 degC I get around 60mpg when the car is in the right mood / mode - this is when the last DPF regen was at least 100 miles earlier and a regen does not occur during the trip or only right at the end.

If fewer miles since the last regen or a regen occurs at the start of the trip the mpg will be rather lower but by 30 miles the average will be over 50.

Above 70mph the mpg rolls off quite sharply. This is to be expected in any car but as posted above the Fabia is not the most aerodynamic of designs.

Your 37-44mpg seems very low even allowing 10 miles for the engine to thoroughly warm up.

Do you have the air conditioning permanently on as that will drop the mpg a little?

Maybe someone can be more specific. Apart from an occasional run I only turn it on when the weather is really hot so just a few days this year ....

Like you my usual fuel is Shell Fuelsave.
