Wobbly, knocking driveshafts

Featured Replies

Hi,

Last week I noticed a knocking noise, on further inspection it seems to be coming from the gearbox where the driveshafts attach. There seems to be a lot of play in them as I can move them by hand.

Can anyone tell me what the cause might be? As I need to go to the garage but don't want to be duped in to fitting a replacement box if its possible to fix the current one.

Theres no problem with any of the gears and its driving fine.

Thanks

Dan

Worn CV joint(s)?

No, its the part in the gearbox that moves and rattles, not the cv's.

I think I'd also have to be the most unlucky person in the workd to have both inner ones go at the same time.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Well if it's definitely not the CVs and and the gear engagement is fine (smooth action, no tendancy to jump out of gear on a torque reversal) I'd think it's most likely the differential.

My brother had this on his Renault 5 gt turbo turned out to be he diff bearing had collapsed and you could get.hold of the drivshaft and lift the diff out and down, any oil on the floor?

Definitely not the CVs. The gears are fine, no jumping out and all engage as they should.

Theres no oil leak from the box.

If its the diff bearing, is it easy to replace? And cheaper than a replacement box?

Thanks for all the responses.

Maybe the hubs are loose into the gearbox? I had one come loose on my VRS. Tightened up the big Allen key in the middle and all is good.

Again, I think I'd very unlucky for them both to come loose at the same time.

I'm going to get a price from the local garage today to do the diff bearing.

Thanks for the help guys.
