I havean after market gear knob fitted and reverse simply engages by moving it, no push down or lift up required. I hate it. It's really easy to get reverse when you want 1st.

Is the Octavia push down or lift up reverse usually and how can I fix this?

It's push down, and I think you would have to change the the whole assembly, with cables

IIRC, the SDI has an 02K gearbox which doesn't use cables (selector rod).

Does it look like the OEM gearchange assembly or is that aftermarket?

I'll have to take a pic of it....
