Brake Cleaning

Featured Replies

I only do about 3000 miles per year so I thought this year as the brake pads all have lots of wear left I would spray everything thoroughly with brake cleaner although I have always previously stripped the brakes and cleaned and copper greased them.

I have bought a tin of Pagids 'New Formula' brake cleaner from Eurocar parts to do this The directions on the tin are minute, but I managed to read them with a magnifying glass and saw that it should not get onto Thermoplastics and rubber.

I am now wary of using it as I am afraid that if I spray it on as intended it will be impossible to ensure that it does not get onto the Caliper piston rubber seals and brake cable rubber sleaves and destroy them. I assume it would also remove any ramaining copper grease.

Has anyone any experience of this type of product and advice please.

Cheers,

Having been in F1, the team used Wurth brake cleaner by the vat load and only a small amount of it on brakes!! For my part it shifted all sorts of crud off plastic computer parts. It was wiped/washed off straight away, so I didn't have a problem...much. You'll see it start to discolour the plastic first. That as worse as I got. Also ok at shifting brake crud from alloys.

Thanks for that, seems from that it will be OK as long as I wash residue off promptly as soon as it has done its job.

Cheers.

There are a few very old threads on using copper grease (not); perhaps worth a look.

At such a low ,mileage I'd be tempted to clean inside the dust covers and move the pistons back and forth a few times beyond their normal movement as dust etc and wear can lead to a lip which could cause roblems in the future.

that would be fine to use, i work for a toyota main dealer the techs in my place go through gallons of break cleaner each week!!
