Blown 2 turbos within 5 days! :@

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Basically I popped my turbo last Monday,

Got it to a garage ordered a recon turbo from turbo dynamics,

Picked up the car on wed and drove it home, immediately i could feel It was very sluggish (didn't rag it though) so I went back to the garage they checked everything and said drive it home and see if anything changes, so I did, it was sluggish, and the turbo didn't sound healthy, sounded like it was being suffocated :/ (but I'm no mechanical genius lol) and it was going into limp mode when I was doing 65-75 mph. Turn it off and back on and it was out of limp mode.

So I went back to the garage the next day, they put it up on the lift and found that the actuator arm was sticking. So they did pressure tests and freed it up, took the car for a drive and it was super sluggish and bellowing out black smoke. And it was diesel knocking at about 2k rpm.

That was after driving 10 miles back to town which also set me back 1/4 of a tank of derv :( when back in town I had it scanned by a brand new snap on diagnostics computer and it detected egr fault and air flow fault.

I was driving back upto the garage the next day and the black smoke was still bellowing out and still knocking if I accelerated upto 2k rpm, so 400 metres away from the garage it cut out and now will not start, but it will turn over. The garage towed me in, checked the egr, it was fine. so then they started looking and found that the shaft had snapped on the new turbo! Turbo is going to be collected by turbo dynamics on Monday for them to investigate it. Has anyone please got a solution or thought on this? As i am lost without my car and fed up! Thank you.

This is the first victim :

Oh and both turbos were full of oil apparently :(

What's diesel knocking?

Remember someone a while back having similar issues!

No performance mods?

Did the garage not investigate why the first turbo failed before fitting the new one?.

Did they get ALL the bits of the old one out of the cars intercooler, and check that no other fragments had made it as far as the engine?

Where there's so much diesel going into the engine it knocks, it obviously isn't getting enough air?

Her it's had a revo generic map,

Yer they said they had cleaned everything, the turbo had gone supposedly because I rag the car all day most days and haven't been letting it warm up and cool down?

They might have "forgot" to clean the intercooler out so whatever shrapnel fired out of the 1st turbo when it went bang has gone into the intercooler/ pipework.. when uv driven the car with the new turbo on abit of that shrapnel has managed to get into the new turbo smashing the blades/ shaft + internal of the turbo allowing oil into the turbo.. *boom*

Also they should have changed the oil also when fitting the new turbo incase any of the tiny metal particles from the old turbo got into the oil.. (especially as the old turbo has oil in it)

Hope that helps.. sounds like 90% chance the garage has fooked up.. very unlikely the recon turbo was at fault m8 ;)

I didnt think TD did recon turbo's? Did you source the turbo or them?

Her they did change the oil, but thank you, I will let them know, and sorry it wasn't td it was turbo solutions :/ my bad got them mixed up lol

It was turbo solutions

It was turbo solutions

There's your problem then. I've got a gt1749vb from them and I've had to remove it twice in the last nine month for a rebuild

Mine is getting sent back today mate, they want both back to compare damage, the garage has said that both have the same damage so my bets are they will say it was my fault for the second one but surely it's impossible blow a correctly working turbo within 2-3 days of it being fitted? The garage has said the shaft has seized and snapped on both :/

You'd think. I am currently in the same boat with Turbo Technics, minus I didnt even get to drive the car off the ramps before the turbo was shagged and they are saying it's my fault LOL. Idiots.

They rung me today and have said both have blown due to over spinning :/

What are they saying caused the over spinning?

What are they saying caused the over spinning?

They didn't give a cause, they offered me to buy another refurb turbo at a discounted price so if it works after putting this one on then I know it was a faulty turbo and will beging the process of retrieving my money via trading standards, getting really fed up with it now so if its not rite ill be trailering it up to skoda and getting them to plug it in, scan it and sort it out :(

Any more updates on this? I'm having probs with a recon turbo too. Car is in for a diagnostic check tomorro. Symptoms are its going into limp mode when I go up hill or accelerate hard.

Forget recon turbo's. I've always bought my brand new genuine turbos from turbo dynamics and never had a customer come back to me with another turbo problem.

Always make sure all intake system gets stripped and cleaned. Always replace turbo feed pipe and change oil and filter. Good luck
