Gear change whining!...

Featured Replies

I have a 3 month old new Octy 1.6 FSI which is really a lovely car and a joy to drive. But I get this whining noise (kind of high pitch faint wistle) when I accelerate to change from 1st to 2nd gear. The same but less audible when changing from 2nd to 3rd. None for higher changes.

I wonder if all Octys are like that or whether it is only mine.

Also I wonder what causes this faint but audible noise which lasts only a couple of seconds just as I press the clutch to change the gear.

I'll appreciate your feedback folks

Thanks

Yes, I get this on my 1.9TDI so it's probably not engine specific. It wasn't apparent at first, I have only just noticed it, although I was concentrating on a vibrating noise when I accelerated only to find it was my sunglasses in the center console. :o

I have a 7 month old Octavia 1.9 TDi PD Ambient (105BHP) with 13, 500 miles on the clock. I have just started detecting a whining noise. It is most noticeable when accelerating in the lower gears - particularly from cold.

I haven't noticed any noise when the clutch is depressed but I'll check next time that I'm in the car.

Thanks for your comments guys.

I find that changing gears has nothing to do with the whining. It is caused by revving up the engine even with no gear engaged. Must be a characteristic of the engine itself?

I am disapponted at not getting enough feedback from forum friends to help establish whether this applies to all engines or not.

You sure it's not just the turbo ?

You sure it's not just the turbo ?

On a 1.6 FSI?

Have a look at the post just above, where it mentions: "I have a 7 month old Octavia 1.9 TDi PD Ambient"

That would be the diesel one which I would be referring to now, wouldn't it

Obviously a non-turbo wouldn't have turbo-whine :finger:

I believe the whine is a common trait on VW gearboxes. Some people say the gearbox would take at least 5000miles to break in but mines closing this and the whining is still very audible. I've also heard from various sources that changing to fully synthetic gearbox oil would fix the problem. I'm about to try this myself soon..

anyway I wouldn't worry about it as long as the gears engage properly, the dealer should change the oil under warranty as it's a known problem..

Make it clear then. The root of the thread is a 1.6 FSI issue :P .
