New Lambda probes

A friend of mine has been told he needs two new Lambda probes, one before and after the cat.

Symptoms are an intermittent engine warning light and sluggish acceleration below 2000rpm, only when the warning light is on however.

But can they be fitted easily - on the driveway by me, for instance? And if so, would the ECU need to be reset or would the engine light go out automatically?
