Now I'm no mechanic, but.....

I'm sure that my rear shock/strut shouldn't look like this :-(

Had two people in the back that must have been best part of 50st and a boot full of their shopping. Hit a pot hole and thought I'd snapped a wheel the bang was so loud.

I'm assuming the rear shock is goosed like, but what is the rubber/sponge stuff, and where is the rear spring?

Also does the octavia sport have the same suspension set up as the Vrs, or is it just like any other 2.0 pd hatch?

Cheers

John

that's the bump stop, needs replacing post haste. As for the rear spring, no idea where that is, can't see it from here. Have you compared it to the other side?

Cheers mate, I'll be in the garage in the morning and get it up on the ramps.

So could it possibly just be the bump stop that I need to replace?

Could that on its own cause the car to bang loudly when under load driving over rough ground?

it'd make a racket for sure, hopefully it's just that as they're about 15 quid for the part. As mentioned, check the other side for where the spring should be.

Its difficult to see in that pic, but it certainly does look like the foam bump stop on the shock has fallen apart.

This would certainly explain the noises over bumps. Should be a cheap part and easy enough to change (remove shock and it slides on/off.

Cheers lads, yeah it's falling apart. Can actually pull bits of it off with my fingers, I wonder if using the octy as a boat the last few days has finished it off lol

Crossed a few deep flooded roads on Monday and Tuesday :-(

Two people... 50 stone??!!!! :o

Not gonna say anything more, we all know what it would be!!

I'm not even joking mate, they were huge!!

I'll have to get some stickers made up with weight restrictions on :-D

If the car was rear end heavy and you've hit a bump then it's likely the suspension has hit the bump stop pretty damn hard.

This is what is designed for (hence the name) but over time they deteriorate.

Mr and Mrs Clump and their suitcases full of pies have cleary finished it off!

The spring is hidden by the rear wheel. Stick you head under the car and you should see it.

Rear springs are a weak point on the Octavia and with yours being a taxi I'm guessing you often carry a fair amout of weight in the back. Whilst they often don't look broken they tend to snap off the last inch (the pig tail). I'd definately get it up on some ramps for a good poke around.

Aaaah, you're a taxi driver. Your poor car! lol

Yep nice car and wrong clientele lol.

Cheers for the replies, can't get it up on the ramps til 8:30 Monday. But that's ok cos I don't work weekends anyway.

Just means driving the gf's Astra around today and tomorrow :-(

It's an easy quick job, you don't even need to take the strut off, just unbolt the top part and slide the ram down. The fronts are a different matter.

You cannot see the springs as they are inboard .This pic( before I got koni Fsds ) shows the spring at the side .You normally cannot see it unless articulated DSC00190.jpg

Update!

Got into the garage yesterday and put it up on the lift.

Can't find anything wrong with any spring, or the shocks, also no play in any of the bushes.

Got new bump stops, so will see how it goes. And will just stop picking up hippos!! Lol

Cheers everyone for advice and pics
