TFSI engines - oil consumption

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am interested to have what oil consumption Briskoda members are getting. Just got my 2 litre and I am hearing some horror stories where the oil comsumption is horrendous. My last car, a Mazda, never needed topping up between services right up to the time I sold it after 8 years ownership.

I believe anything more than a litre between services is unacceptable for modern techology engines no matter what VAG (SUK) say.

Quite a variation tbh. TFSI is a known oil drinker.

Mine uses about a litre between annual services but I think that is on the rise now as the mileage on the car goes up. Still nothing scary.

VAG consider something mental like a liter every 500 miles to be within tolerance. At that rate the car might as well be a 2 stroke.

I'm sure my old Saab 96 2 stroke drank less!

I've heard it's something to do with how they're run in. Not sure how long you'd have to go careful with it from new before you can give it a good hooning though :p

My Dad's 2.0 TDI PD140 was run in nicely but it drank oil at a furious rate, to the extent where he kept a small 500 ml or 1 litre bottle in the car. And it ate at turbo at 50,000 miles and sounded like it was going to eat one again just as it was returned, at about 80,000. Not as if though it got abused, he really looks after his stuff. So I think quite a lot of VAG turbocharged engines have an appetite for oil.

There was a known issue with (at least) 1.8 TFSI engines regarding oil consumption. VAG changed pistons and piston rings' specs twice in 2011.

My engine was built at the end of October 2011. By now I have about 8000km on the clock and I already had to add ~500ml of oil.
