Slapping noise?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, got a slight problem..

When i bought my 54 Fabia vrs i never noticed that the person i bought it off had apparently serviced it the day after i bought it (stamped and dated in the book also) so in other words im guessing he done me over.

I've recently started getting a weird slapping noise which increases with revs, i got told it might be the tappets? but apparently if its the tappets you can hear it when its ticking over, but you can't with mine so i'm guessing its not that?

For all i know it could be something serious, but i'm clueless.. I changed the oil and the oil filter this morning cause someone said it could've been cause my oil was like tar seeing as it wasn't actually serviced but that's made no difference what so ever..

Any clues?

Thanks.

Is it definetly engine noise? My girlfriends dad had an octavia estate and that started making a slapping noise..turned out to be the undertray slapping about downstairs :p

Yeah its definitely the engine, stops when i take my foot off the accelerator. Someone said it could even be something to do with the drive shaft? but common sense tells me that would be more of a metal clunking noise? this sounds like a slapping/spitting noise

can you give us a bit more info

was the oil at correct level before the change, and after?

have you checked / replaced the air filter?

have you checked all the pipes on the intake from the air box / filter turbo and all the joints on the pipes from turbo to and from intercooler

does it sound ok on tickover?

any loss of power?

The oil level was fine and yes i changed the air filter, all pipes are fine, tickover sounds nornmal and theres no loss of power mate

This might be irrelevant but a mates corsa made a slapping noise. Turned out to be the timing belt had a slit on it and was slapping the case. If its that get it looked at as soon as.

that would also possibly fit with the noise only being noticeable when revs raised, depending on size of slit / damage to timing belt

easy to check, remove top section of timing belt cover start the engine let it tick over and look carefully at belt, if anything noticed, stop the engine and turn the engine over by hand and carefully inspect the whole belt

don't forget to replace the cover and don't let oil get on the belt as that can cause the belt to deterioate

Alright ill check the belt tomorrow, thanks

Try jacking the front up and putting on axle stands and starting the car, then rev it. Be careful but it should help you locate what it is. Does it do it in gear or just when revved standing?

  • Author

Only in gear matty, and i havent had chance to check the timing belt yet

only in gear?

that would let the timing belt out then?

does the noise vary with road speed or engine speed?

if road speed then gearbox / drive shaft, whels or tyres

if engine speed, engine, clutch or input side of gearbox

you hit any potholes or debris in road lately?

  • Author

Erm just road speed, cant hear it when you rev it, only when moving. And not that i know of, the speed of the noise increases as the revs do though

Last time I had slapping it was the rear thread of the brand new kwick fit remolds coming off at 80 mph!

Sent from my Galaxy S2 not a Crapple!

check the drive shafts for anything caught round them,

check the drive shaft gaiters for any splits etc

check the tyres carefully, including the inside walls, (turn on full lock so you can check the fronts easier)

Alright i will when i get some spare time and its stil light ouside thanks, forgot to mention its only when im accelerating too. Never does it without my foot on the accelerator. cheers

I would say it something to do with the driveshafts or cv joints myself. I would probably just take it to an independant garage and see what they say. The problem with diagnosing this problem on the internet is that we are all just guessing on whats wrong as we cant see/hear it ourselves, and itll probably cost you less as you wont be swapping out parts suggested by 20 different members who are miles away!

Yeah im gonna tomorrow mate, thanks

curiosity

is it lowered or running non standard wheels/ tyres?

is it stock power or has it been mapped or chipped?

any wear of the inside edges of the tyres or were the front tyres pretty new when you got it?

Its standard, normal wheels not lowered and not mapped or chipped. And yeah both front tyres were worn inside, got them changed recently but was in a rush so didnt get the tracking done and its pulling massively to the right
