Retrofit Cruise Control Problem

Featured Replies

Hi

I've just had our local garage fit the cruise control stalk to my '08 VRS PD, but they were unable to get the control system to recognise it. The booklet that came with the kit mentions a 'steering column electronic control unit'. It looks like mine has the wrong one, unless I'm missing something. I assume these are only available from Skoda. Are they expensive ?

AFAIK its just the coding that needs to be done once the stalk is fitted. A tool like VCDS or the dealer VAS system can change that.

Thanks, but the garage has some decent coding equipment, and they weren't able to get it to work, which is why I'm questioning the control unit.

Which control unit do you have fitted?

With that information you will be able to see on the Ross Tech Wiki whether your module will support CC or not.

If not, I have a couple for sale that will. PM me if interested - one is in the 'for sale' section. The other is still in my car (with CC) as I am awaiting an upgrade to a new controller that will support MFSW as well as CC.

When they do the coding, there are two controllers that need altering: The 'steering controller' and also the 'engine' controller (so that it knows CC is fitted).

If you can answer the first question, then we will be able to give you a more definitive answer and advice.

This won't help solve the problem, but it sounds familar - when I asked my dealer for a quote ot retrofit cruise control, they said the price could be higher if they subsequently find the steering controller to be the wrong revision. I haven't gone ahead with this mod, so no comment on cost I'm afraid.

I did it myself for £25 for a used CC stalk and no modification to the controller as the 'BC' controller I had is compatible.

A used steering controller for CC, MFSW & trip computers can be had for £60+

Coding will cost a few bottles of beer to a Briskodian with VCDS.

All in, around £100 minimum if you don't have a compatible controller already installed (which it sounds like the OP doesn't).

This would apply on Octavias up to around 2011 (I think) when they changed the wiper and CC stalks as well as the slip ring (I think) to be one expensive all in part. So prices for that upgrade will be around £300+ I guess.

I don't know - do I have to strip it all down again to find which type it is ?

Yes. Unless you have a scan done with VCDS or similar. That will tell you the controller part number and then you can check compatibility on the Ross Tech Wiki.

I'm on my phone so can't see your location, but if you are anywhere near Hereford / Wircester, give me a shout as I have VCDS.

I was going to ask about this as I want to fit cruise to my Octy. I've heard that some cars can't have it fitted (or like mentioned above, its a load more expensive)... how I can find out what control unit I have?

Post #7 & #8 have the information you need - either take the wheel and column covers off to physically look, or have a scan done with VCDS (or similar) to identify the controller fitted.

I'm not sure about cars not being able to have it fitted at all - I suspect it just depends upon how much you wish to spend on getting it fitted.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm in south Lincs, so a bit of a journey !

The rosstech listings says with a note the BC doesn't work.

They do. All I have found is after coding the battery needs to be disconnected and terminals put together (terminal 30 reset) and then it works.

BC controllers do work, no need to disconnect the battery (apart from when you take the airbag off / on)

BC controllers with:

035 0070

036 0070

636 0070

work fine

The issue with compatibilty is down to the software on the controllers. If the controller has 638 0070 it won't work. I have seen Modules ending AQ and BD which according to Ross-tech support cruise fail to work, even though the coding is accepted and in the MVB the stalk shows that it is working

I've got a BC controller currently fitted and it does work with CC. All I had to do was code it.

I had the battery disconnected to avoid any problems with airbags, but did not do anything else.

BC controller will be for sale shortly if anyone's interested...

Hi KBPhoto

Was going to PM you, then thought that perhaps the answers you might be able to give could help others besides myself.

I've just purchased my first Skoda in 30 years, and have been really pleased so far. It's a Superb 1.4TSi 'S' - low rent, I know, with Dual Zone aircon and auto lights as the only extras.

Am I correct in thinking that a lot of Octavia FL electrics are the same as the Superb.

If so, you could maybe help with my quest....

Bluetooth. I have a Parrot MKi9200 system which I removed from my Mondeo before trading it in. Pretty good bluetooth function, and advantage of 32GB SD card for music.

I could either fit his, or go down the 9W7 route and fit Bluetooth to the Swing (RCD310) radio.

However, I don't have a multifunction wheel, so to fit this, I guess I need a wheel and a module. Do you know if your one will work? The Superb was registered 12/2011.

I'd also like to fit cruise control, but don't know whether my stalks are new style or old style. Not sure when they changed. I have a white screen display, which seems to show infr from top to bottom. I guess that's counted 'high'?

Anyway

Appreciate any answers you can give me, or pointers in the right direction!

Regards

There is indeed a lot of commonality between all VAG cars, not just the Octavia and Superb.

The BC controller I have will not work with a MFSW - it just doesn't support them. Hence the reason why I cam changing mine (I have a nice leather one waiting to go in - only a pre-FL 4 spoke, but all the same functionality...)

I do have an 'AM' steering module on eBay at the moment that will support MFSW, Highline display and CC (although this finishes in 19 minutes - no bidders though!)

If you are happy with the Parrot kit, I'd just have that fitted with your Swing - it will be far cheaper (just fitting costs) and you won't get bogged down with any worries over compatibility.

I don't think you have to have a MFSW to use the phone if you go down the 9W7 module (or any other module) route. I know people who do have BT and Maxidot and and control the BT from the wiper stalk or their head unit (Bolero & Columbus).

If you do decide to go down the VAG parts route as opposed to your Parrot, you will need to know what controller you have fitted at the moment so tha you can buy the right one to work with other components in your car (notably the slip ring type). I made that mistake and have been lumbered with a controller that is not compatible with my car (the 'AM' one) but will work with other vehicles with a different slip ring.

Your superb will use the newer style of stalks and controller. there are 2 types, so best to get a scan of your car with vag com so you know what you have fitted

Thanks, KBPhoto

Really appreciate you taking the time to give such a full reply. So chances are your AM module wouldn't work for me either.....

Maybe just, as you said, keep it simple and install the Parrot.

Sorry I didn't spot how new your Superb was - and Eddie is right that the newer ones are fitted with different stalks and controllers (more expensive as well).
