I'm in the process of getting a spare wheel/tyre sorted for the S-Max and was thinking!

As I don't have a spare tyre I could fit a Winter tyre which would be beneficial if I have a flat during the colder winter months but maybe not so great in the warmer month/s, fit a summer tyre great in the warmer months but not so great in the colder months or fit an All Year Round tyre that will be average no matter what the weather?

Just put a normal tyre on it and treat it as temporary road wheel. As a spare use a non directional tyre so that it can be fitted to either side.

not a lot of point with one of these skinny spacesavers.

Any wheel even a space saver is better than no wheel at all,

Its all down to health and saftey apparently

Given that a 'space saver' will have a 50MPH speed limit (or any tyre that is a different size to that fitted the rest of the car) you either 'need' one identical (sized) to the rest, or IF you intend to run winter tyres then buy a 5th for the spare.

This is what I would do if I had to buy a spare tyre .

I voted winter tyre.... but I run them in the winter anyway, so it make sense to me, however my Superb came with a spare tyre so it is a normal all season tyre (allbeit a 16" one) and SWMBO's TT has a skinny space saver (the MK2 does not have the option to fit a spare wheel & tyre)

Sorry, I should have said. The Spare wheel is a 16" alloy from a Mondeo, this will allow me to fit a tyre that will match the rolling radius of my 17" winter wheels & my 18" summer wheels.

I discounted a space saver as I wouldn't feel comfortable using one if we were towing the caravan and it also gives me a little more flexability in getting the damaged tyre replaced if needed.

Does the s max have a spare wheel well?

Does the s max have a spare wheel well?

Sadly 'no' . I will devise something to hold it down in the boot. Its daft really as there is loads of space underneath the boot for a spare wheel (unless you have the 2.2d or the 2.5t which has twin exhausts)

For the sake of a few ££ Ford decided a 7seat family car doesn't need a spare wheel and if you have a blow out in the middle of the night on a journey you don't mind having to wait around for hours for a tyre place to open to get a new tyre!

When I swopped my TDi Vrs for a Petrol FL Vrs part of the deal that my spare wheel came with me.

A tin of gunk won't seal a 6" gash at 4 in the morning

Its a spare wheel, it's purpose is to get you to the nearest garage for a puncture repair or replacement.

I therefore wouldn't imagine it matters what type of tyre you fit, assuming it's only ever going to be used for a day or two max.

Running a winter tyre in the summer for a few days won't matter so cover all bases and fit a winter tyre.

Better still, fit the cheapest.

Tyres for this car are so much more expensive than the Octavia :'( (not looking forward to buying x4 new 18" tyres next year as they start around £150 each)

Have decided togo for a pre used winter tyre. Have found a Pirelli non directional one locally with 5mm tread/no punctures with fitting for £35

Just need to ring them on monday

Considering that space saver spares are skinny they will "bite" into the snow better in any case.
