Hi! Thinking of buying

DSG? I'm a lifelong manual gearbox fan and couldn't really see any great reason for having an automatic but after trying the DSG, I ordered one and I'm collecting it from the dealer later today! :)

The best advice I can give is to try both & see which you prefer.

  • I do love a petrol vs diesel thread once in a while!

  • Great cars - roomy, fast, well-built. How many miles a year do you do? If not mega miles, I'd suggest a petrol. Faster, smoother, and far less likely to go wrong. Insurance is simply a matter of

  • As with any insurance what is good for one can be riddiculous for another, skoda insurance (through zurich) was over £1700 for me so I paid £400 to 'more than' instead. They were cheapest for two or

Test drove a DSG on a CR and hated it. The gear changed were imperceptible but it wanted to be in 6th at 40mph so you were sat at 1200rpm or something silly like that. Put it in sport mode and it kept the revs too high for a diesel.

Just use the manual gear change option then on the DSG. The dsg has the same option as the manula plus the additional option of full auto. WIn.

Anyone got any knowledge on the reliability of a pd vs a cr engine?

Well the vrs PD has the well publicised injector issue, however they should all have been sorted out by the recall.

Apart from that, general reliability is probably much the same........I think the two engines are pretty much the same apart from the fuel delivery method. The major difference is the way they deliver power....the PD has an immense delivery of power when you hit 2000 RPM. So much so that it feels quicker than the CR. It's not actually quicker, the CR just delivers power in a more linear way.

The CR is more refined than the PD but some people prefer the PD style power delivery.

Again, probably best to test drive both and see what you think.

PD is known to have more DPF issues as effectively the DPF was a retrofit whereas the CR had the DPF in mind from the word go. Just the sensor to keep an eye on really (make sure it's made in Malaysia not the US).

As said above injector issue to think about too.

The PD is thought of as being quicker than the CR but is more clattery too. The CR is roughly on par with the TFSI petrol when warmed up which isn't bad.
