Wonder if Skoda will follow suit?

Featured Replies

Went into a kia garage last year and noticed that they charge for white also.Give it time and every car maker will follow suit...

I dont understand why people buy white cars. They'll be out of fashion again in a couple of years. Blak however never goes out :)

True, but it's rarely black, usually more a muddy grey :giggle:

But back on topic, it's a rip off charging extra for solid colours. The prices for metallics are stupid as well to be honest, most manufacturers charging at least 500 and some upwards of 750 just for a few metal flecks. Next thing they'll be charging you for daring to have suspension on your car :wall:

Soon the only colour they'll offer as part of the list price will be some God awful colour to force you pay £350+ for any of the other paints. Hell, they might just lacquer over the primer.

I wonder if white became popular because it was free? I picked white as it was free. I liked it anyway but if silver was free i would have picked that before white.

Whatever remains as the free option will probably become popular. Unless its yellow.

I believe that the reason for the increase in the price of paint surrounds the supply chain. The majority of the pigments which go into the paint is sourced overseas, mainly Japan. Although some time ago, the Japanese earthquake really hit the supply chain and the industry is still recovering. Therefore, the suppliers and the manufacturers have had to resource their pigments and paint as a result, increasing costs as a result.

Vauxhall are charging extra for white now too.

Red that turns to pink within 5 years is the only non extra charge colour now.

Plastic bits stay red free of charge however.

Do VW charge now if you have a white commercial vehicle too?

^^ No standard at the minute, pearl effect is optional at extra cost.

I rekon soon they'll offer commercial vehicles in battleship grey only as standard, like how BT vans use to be in the late 90s. Then cars will probably follow. It'll be like driving around in advert for how tight you are!

White paint is expensive hey... pull the other one? If white costs more than colour, then surely there is something amis?

I agree about charging another £300+ for a metallic rather than solid does seem a bit OTT, but don't forget that if it's a limited number there is a cost to load the paint machines with the paint and clean them out again before they're used for the next colour.

Obviously this doesn't apply for something really popular like silver, but might for some of the super odd colours.

As for battleship grey, what's wrong with that. If they can offer Battle Ship Grey, Cammo Green and RAF Grey/Blue on cars, then that's fine by me. Perhaps also Army Desert cammo ;)

Whatever remains as the free option will probably become popular. Unless its yellow.

And what's wrong with yellow ? Every other car on the road is a dark shade of silver or grey or race blue, or red but not yellow.

Waits for Leon and Auric....

Yellow cars are fun.

I always smile in our Fiat.

Car companies cannot justify charging around £500 or whatever for metallic paint. Extra cost is negligible. Fleet buyers DO NOT pay extra and they screw the manufacturers margins right down. It is another way of companies to make money from us which is quire right because that is why they are in business to maximise profit margins and turnover. Just look how warrnties differ. Volvo UK 3yr 60000m Volvo USA 100000m.

They'll be like Caterham soon. Paint is a cost option full stop. Supplied in treated metal otherwise.

the flying arrow on the front serves that purpose already..?

True

Surprised nobody has mentioned the fact that you seem to pay the same for optional paint colours, irrespective of the size of the car.

As far as I am aware having a Citigo in metallic costs the same as a Superb Estate...

That seemed rather cheeky to me.
