Possible suspension issues with older Octavias?

Featured Replies

I have just had some quotes for front and rear shocks and springs on my 12 year old Mondeo, and the parts alone are going to cost around £350, and I will have a go at doing the rear end.

So my question is, how are Octavias (mine is a 55 plate) on their main suspension parts, because at the moment, my car feels really solid, with no untoward rattles, clonks or other noises.

Oh yes, the reason why I am still spending money on the old Mondeo, is because I have had it for seven years, and it has now done around 130K miles, and is such a civilised car (it has been to Italy and France four or five times).

I don't know if there are any specific weak points with the Octavia suspension, however my last two "work" cars both needed their rear dampers changing in their time on the fleet (that said, I have alluded previously that they lived a brief but very hard life). I know that other that have a more normal useage seem to be fine.

It will really depend on how the car's used, and the type of work it's used for, and on what surfaces.

I wouldn't say there are any inherent weaknesses in the standard suspension setup though. How many miles have you done?

The Octavia has done 96K miles, and as I said before, it sounds good, and feels good a the moment. The Mondeo had its first front shocks replaced at about 85K (along with coil springs, which were both broken). I hope that it will be mostly motorway work, but there is a section of speed humps each day which are unavoidable.

At 110k miles the dampers we effed and the springs are ok apart from a little surface rust.

I fitted b12 so if you want spare springs i have 4 listed in the for free section of the forum.

Cheers for that. Do you reckon it is worth me buying a pair of spring compressors (to do the Mondeo as well) for when the Octavia needs seeing to?

Depends if you want to DIY or you're fine to pay somebody to do it.

You're probably only likely to do it once in the life of the car you own, so that's purely down to your preferences.

I'd agree. I've always got a garage to do suspension fitment.

Oh, and cheeze - think your suspension-related signature needs amending now ;)

Don't know what you're on about Steve ;)
