Newbie advice wanted

Featured Replies

HI.

Apologies if this is an oft repeated cry for advice but I'm new here.

My MkII Octavia sucessfully passed its MoT today but with an advisory that the front o/s damper will need replacing soon.

I've already "upgraded" the front bushes with a complete set of some nice blue Powerflex bushes, now the time has come to upgrade the dampers.

I'm thinking of getting Koni FSDs. Does anyone have similar experience of using Koni FSD on a 1.9 TDi?

Also if you have the knowing:

  • Should I go for the 55mm or 50 mm struts?
  • Do I keep the original springs or go for replacement springs whilst I've got the car up in the air?
  • Should I get around to fitting the Powerflex rear bushes sometime soon?
  • Would you recommend something other than Koni FSD?
  • Will I get hammered on insurance?

I mostly drive A and B roads but occasionally do a long motorway journey.

My driving style could be described as quite aggressive in the corners; hey anyone can drive fast in a straight line!

Any advice given will be gladly received. Once the handling is sorted I'll look at power upgrades.

Thanks.

I can't discuss the Octavia specifically, but I had Eibach Pro-Line springs and Koni FSD shocks on my previous 8P A3 TDi (so same basic chassis platform) and was very pleased with the combination. Much better than the stock S-Line setup from the factory. Handled well with the stock OEM ARBs

The struts will need to match your hubs mate, it's not a choice , its whats already there, do a search on konis lots on here , I have had a set and think they're pretty good , best mod i made was rear anti roll bar I would say

On this forum you'll find FSD's are a bit "marmite". Some people love them, others not.

I've had my car on OE dampers, then FSD, now Weitec coilovers. My new car is on order and I've ordered Bilsteins for that.

HTH.

Best I check and see what size is currently fitted. Cheers.

Good to know as I didn't want to set about changing the roll-bars just yet. Thanks.

I've got a H & R 55mm/40mm kit on mine with Whiteline ARBs. Brilliant I say.

I've driven a car with FSD's, albeit not a Skoda.

Horrid in my opinion, did not like what they did and had a real bad rep on another forum. I bought proper coilovers for my old car (BC) and they were hugely better.
