Cambelt- when to change?

Featured Replies

I believe that to properly inspect the cambelt you have to take the cover off anyway and if you've gone that far, you might as well change the belt! Personally, I'd be changing it at 60k too, but that's just cos I know if it goes at 80k miles, Skoda ain't gonna be interested in paying for the repair to the engine......

Chris

mine is an 05 fabia vrs and the service book tells you to change the belt every 120,000 kms which is about 70 odd thousand miles. again no time limit given. The book doesnt actually say what car its for oddly enough. just says skoda auto service schedule. only dealer stickers and that bar code sticker thing has got the fabia name on it.

I can only conclude that the service book you have is different to mine. I can't see why you say "about 70,000 miles" since my book states mileage as well as kilometrage.

My car is a late 2004 MY2005 Fabia vRS.

The generic Service Book (dated 2003) - nothing odd about that - absolutely clearly states that it's the ATD Petrol Engine only that has a belt replacement at 120,000km (80,000 miles). It's clear by derivation that the vRS falls into the 150,000km (100,000mile) requirement as a "diesel" engined car.

Perhaps you could type out the words precisely as noted in your book?

Had to have my belt changed at 38k - yes 38k believe Vag have put out a service check now - had mine covered by warranty. so beware. ...................................

2003 Passat 130pd Sport + Upsolute chip and bulkhead fuel cooler

Vag told the technician he should't have check it !!! until 60k service

Ouch that sounds really early - it may be coz the engine was remapped but if you happen to have any info on this to help ID the service check that would be excellent :)

DRJ my book is a 2004 book and says-

In addition every 120 000 km

replace toothed belt for camshaft drive (pd engines)

Then under that it states

In addition every 150 000 km

replace toothed belt ( 4-cylinder diesel engines, except pd engines)

The only petrol engine's that are down are a 1.8 ltr and its down for a 180.000 km cambelt change and a 6 cylinder petrol engine at 120 000 km

hope that lot helps but it does look like we have different books

that was a bit dumb of me of course we have different books the dates are different. no mention of milage in mine its all in euros.
