2.0 FSi, Oil Temperature Sensor - Where is it?!

Featured Replies

I've got a fault code - P0196 showing Engine Oil Temp Sensor (G8) Implausible Signal, does anyone know where this sensor is located and how easy it is to change?

Thanks,

Peter

On mine (1.9 TDI) it is combined with the oil level sensor and is on the bottom of the sump - three screws and an electrical connection. I think it is a part common to other engines? I would suggest it's not a big deal to change if you can get under the car. A chat with someone in a parts dept would sort you out.

Thanks FriendlyFire, I had no idea so that's very helpful

I've found this one on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180678419054 but having Googled the part number it seems to be described as an 'Oil Level Sensor', does this have a dual function and also read the oil temperature?....

All things considered, a tenner isn't bad.

I only know from the link I gave you... but, the sensor is described there as having two functions (see half way down the page). Sounds like a logical thing to do. A MAP sensor is both a tempt and boost pressure sensor.

I'd say have a word at your dealership and be safe. The part number on ebay has a letter at the end ( B) which implies either there are variations or upgrades on that basic part number. So, for example, you might need a B or C suffix. A dealer would know for sure.

Personally, if mine went, I'd be happy to attempt it but you could let a dealer do it. I can't see a dealer charging more than a hours labour. Mind you, that's 100 plus VAT to fit a ten quid part?

Might be worth checking the loom and connector first as it is quite exposed where it is fitted and routed if any work has been carried out on the car.

Also always make sure you are safe under the car, axle stands or ramps, never just a jack.

Thanks guys.

The selling dealer is going to send me the replacement part and I've got access to a pit to fit it (rather than travel 160 miles to get them to do it!)

Gonna do an oil change at the same time.
