Failed it's MOT!

Featured Replies

I was gutted!!

Split driveshaft gator. £80 to fix with OEM part. This is the first car I have owned to ever fail it's MOT.

I heard Two of the mechanics chatting as I was being showed the split gator, "wouldn't expect one of them superbs to fail" said one to the other.

Gutted!!

to be fair a split gator is a nothing and made of plastic or rubber and manufactured by another company. also dependant on outside conditions etc as they are an exposed bit of flimsy material. a gator on a rolls royce will fail at a similar speed. wear and tear

Agreed. Nothing major.

Can happen to any car as they're only rubber.

Just be thankful that's all it is.

I know 2 people that have had new (3 year old) cars fail their first MOT. Both on worn suspension bushes (one's a Focus one's a Fiat 500). Those type of parts should last longer than that.

i had worn (actually split!) suspension bushes on my Chrysler before 2 years had passed, again at 3 years and again at 4. 60,000 miles in total, bye bye chrysler!

I broke a 12 year old M5 with 217,000 miles a couple of weeks ago that still had its original CV gaitors. I think have the driveshafts at the front make a big difference though, both because they are doing the steering and because they are more exposed.

This many years ago and I went through loads of UJ's on my Hillman Imp "Sport"

Hi, I would say the same. On the negative side you will then have a looong driveshaft under the car with normaly 3 joints. The bush on the middle joint is often seen fail before 100.000 miles.

I failed a Jaguar XF on its first MOT for a split steering rack gaitor.

Given the number of moving parts on a car along with the conditions it has to work in you have to expect the odd surprise like that. Friend of mine's 4 year old RX8 just failed on emissions, needs a new cat and that'll be a bit more than £80!
