Funny noise around glovebox...

Featured Replies

Just lately, I seem to have inherited a strange noise...

Basically it sounds like a mouse (with no sense of rhythm) is playing a small cardboard drumkit somewhere behind my glovebox/dash.

Not constant, not that loud, but odd. Not sure how long it's been doing this, but I only noticed it in the last week or so.

Anybody know what gives?

maybe its a mouse (with no sense of rhythm) is playing a small cardboard drumkit???

on a serious note, check your glovy light is not loose. i had a similar thing and it was that.

Which reminds me actually, I haven't replaced THAT bulb with an LED...

YET...

If you press a finger against the glovebox lid does it stop? If so it's a common issue easily fixed with a little bit of foam just inside the lid.

Only other easy to check suggestion I have is run the self diagnostic option on the CC (hold down the 2 bottom corner buttons whilst turning on ignition) there's a flap of some sort behind the glovebox which can come loose and make some noise, the diagnostic should show this

don't rule out ferrets, it could be a group setting up a live venue inside your glove box?

just a thought...

Bwaaahaaahaaa. They're going to make me rich.

Seriously though, it's nothing rattling, it's often there even when I start the car and often a little frantic.

Hmm, the incredible frantic rodents...

Certainly sounds like something ferreting around...

Self diagnostic? Didn't know about that...

lol, get them on idol, you will make a killing!

not the airbox motor flaps/mechanism, these can make noise?

you need the car scanned...

Quite possibly, it's often very frantic though.

And yes, I agree.

Now, if my buddy will just fix my damned laptop... (then I've still got the issue of not being able to connect my cable to it... despite having set it up on port 2)

I searched all over for a similar rattle on the glovebox without success. Finally found it was the button on the end of the handbrake lever was rattling.

I could have sworn it was somewhere around the glovebox and even had my wife checking it while it was rattling without finding it.

Fix was simple - put some light oil (3 in 1) past the handbrake lever button to act as a damper. Problem solved now for at least two years.

This will be the Air con re-circ flap motor, you can either replace, @ about £90, or you can unplug it and set it to fresh air only, both hard jobs, replacment being nigh on impossible, unplgging took me an age and hacked my hands to pieces, it's rough under there belive me

Definitely NOT a rattle.

I think David is probably on the money. I'm not bothered about recirculated air though (despite being surrounded by fields - phew!) so unplugging might be the best option. :(

i concur!

having removed several dashes now, i would say they are a right fecker to replace should you have to..and would need to have the dash out for best access.

I think the flap motor might show up on the diagnostic. Have a search for climate control/climatronic self diagnostic there's is a list of codes (codes are displayed on the CC screen)

Okay, self diagnostics seems to show me there's no issues. It does seem to have settled down. If I push for recirc, then off again, I get the same noise three times, and then it goes quiet again.

I think it's just waiting to break though. Everything else seems to have gone on my motor, so it's just another thing to add to the list...

it is the climatronic recirc motor V71 ,and is dying.

Is a very common issue with theese motors, the teeth will worn each other and this is the sound.

Take a close look on VAG COM when the error

you are done

This it mine....one of the gears got cracked

Is quite tricky to replace

Edited by IulianE

and BTW...is not worthing changing it....it costs about 70 pounds.

It's role is to redirect the air from fresh/outside to recirc....when it's broken will not fully close to give you 100% air from outside, will bring a little air from inside the car,is next to nothing.

Is a pain to replace it,you need small strong fingers...it took me 3 hours.

So,my oppinion....leave it!
