My son is thinking of getting a scout estate, 12 plate with a 1.6 diesel engine....just wondered if there are any problems with them ..or whats good

I have one, and am very pleased with it. The only thing worth mentioning is that advertised fuel consumption of 67 MPG is impossible to get. Skoda have been a tad over optimistic I think. Late 50's, early 60's is possible though. I especially like the £20 tax. Ignore the gear change indicatior and keep it in a gear so the revs are at least 1500rpm. One more thing, change the headlight bulbs to Philips Extreme Vision, the standard dip beam is about as bright as tea lamp.
