New car dilemma - change now or later

Featured Replies

I took my octy in for it's 50k service this morning which all went fine , but while I was lurking round the garage I ended up taking a new octy 2.0tdi out for a quick spin. It really is a *very* nice car and I want one rather badly.

The trade in figures suggested that I probably can't afford it at the mo , but when I went home I looked at my spreadsheet for the car that has the predicted mileage , service costs plus my loan repayments on there.

I'd originally planned to keep octy1 until about 95k miles which I reckon I'll hit around november 2006 , but that would mean being outside the warranty from about the 1st of september this year. Also at 60k there is an expensive service with the cam belt change and the back tyres will need replacing which is probably going to be about 750 quid all in.

That got me thinking about how much it would cost if I changed the car in a couple of months at 57k , and from august this year to the start of december next year the loan repayments and service costs will be a smidge over 6.5k

If I buy a new octy TDI elegance then the monthly repayments will be higher but the service bills will be a lot lower and in total over the same period I'll spend a smidge under 6.5k.

So , do I keep the old car or change it for a new one at no extra cost over the next two years?

Ok, the fuel bills will be a bit higher in the new octy , but there is no chance of any unplanned repair work being needed. On the downside it means I'll have to change the stereo out in the new car which will be a pain and I'd lose the climate control for the fan speed display (not that I ever turn it off auto)

If it was me, I'd opt to change, but I guess it would hinge on what the dealer offered me as a p/x..... :D

Not a great price to be honest , but as long as I clear the outstanding finance I'd be happy. I get a car allowance from work which is paying for the monthly repayments (and the servicing to date)

Go for it then :D Just out of interest, what would you be looking at for your current car (PM if you like).

Same dilemna here.Done 48k but keep being tempted by the new octy.Stepfather picked up his new 2.0tdi eleg last week(18.5 k for everything except sunroof basically) very nice too (very meaty clunk fron the doors, leather that looks like it is out of a very posh car and so nice inside.Audi type dash.Mmmmm

BUT,I am going to do my damdest to sit tight and see what the new new vRS is selling at when it is one year old.Should have a pretty healthy discount.

Must admit I have even been looking at some low mileage 54 plate 1.9 diesels going for about

aa

Personally I would change especially as you would get the peace of mind with the warrenty etc should anything go wrong, petrol costs are negligable IMO, and if the sums add up you should really know the answer already.

What I really don't want is to order a new car then be hit by a delay and end up having to get the 60k service and cam belt done anyway.

Looks like I'll be going round a couple of dealers to see what they say this week.

Get them to commit to a date prior to the 60k service, get them to pick up the tab if it goes over.

I don't think my next car will be an Octy, too expensive now for what you get. Me, I'll probably get a Hyundai :D

Before you laugh at that, I like the idea of a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty - especially as I do 50k+ miles per year. :D

tavia, can't argue with that logic

When my friend bought a new Kia last year I saw the 3 year unlimited mileage warranty and thought "oooh , handy"

Just a shame they don't make any cars I'd want to own

tavia, can't argue with that logic

apart from the fact that its a hyundai

not being a badge snob, swmbo drives a p plate accent. its crap.

i looked at the latest hyundai's a few weeks ago and tbh they don't seem that well finished and tbh quite pricey

Dont see how anyone can criticise the Far Eastern made cars when you look at what they are producing now, and rembering where Skoda have come from. Personally I feel that a car manufacturer who offers a 5 year unlimitied mileage warranty has a great deal of faith in their product, and in the current technological climate puts other manufcturers who only off 1/3 yr's to shame.

just going on what i've seen, have driven swmbo's hyundai a lot. its horrible and very basic, lots of very old technology.

and when i looked in the local hyundai dealership the other day(its also the local seat dealership, i was getting info for my dad) and the cars seemed a little pricey for the build quality and finish of the vehicles, as said i'm not slaging it off because of the badge or anything. just saying what i saw

just looked on hyundai's website and the V6 coupe would be over 20K and slower than a vRS

The other thing to consider is the impact the new vRS will have on residual values of existing mk1 Octy's. So looking at it that way, I would probably imagine you would get proportionally more for yours now rather than later when the new vRS is out, I would sell now if I could afford the new one.

Also, whilst the cost of diesel is greater then petrol, the mpg and tank range outway that of petrol so you would save.

Next thing I'm expecting are pics of Roo's new car plastered all over the site to test my spending patience ;)

Would I do that to you??????? :P

Zoidberg, do what you feel comfortable with, see how long it would take for the car to be built to your spec and then make the choice. If you want a std one with no options, then it would be a lot quicker than one with even just head restraints.

I'd make up my mind quick if I were you though as a lot of people will be ordering soon for sept 1st.

As all I really want is one with a sunroof and metallic paint I'm hoping that they might be able to track one down that's already been made. If not then I'll see how long a made to measure one would be.

Think I'll definately have to go back and see what sort of final figure they can come up with

I was going to order a 2.0 TDI L&K estate, was given September as a delivery date so asked if there were any 2.0 TDI Elegance estates around in any spec so I could pick a car that was as near to the spec as I wanted, still nothing :( . Looks like a wait for the 2.0 TDI, even the local Audi dealership is selling around 80% of the new A4's with the 2.0 TDI.

I might well end up with a Volvo V50 SE 2.0 TDI or a 54 plate A4 Avant

Well Mine was originally put back 2 weeks to this week and when I totally changed the order, they just replaced the old order and kept the date :D .
