Pre-facelift vRS, but with EA888 - Yay or Nay?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I've been looking for quite some time to buy an MK2 vRS, after being more than satisfied with my MK1 (which sadly I had to sell). I had my sights set on the pre-facelift version, mainly because of the price (can't afford the facelift), however I've recently stumbled upon a car which is the pre-facelift version (exterior), but has the new EA888 engine and the facelifted interior.

My question would be: should I get this car? The engine is definitely a keeper and I also like the interior better than the old one (minus the steering wheel). But I have no clue what other (if any) changes are there on this "intermediate" model except the two (engine and interior). Do you know if something is changed on the suspension, transmission etc?

Also, seeing as the new MK3 will probably launch next year, what do you advise me to do? Wait for the full-facelift prices to drop or just go for this one now?

Thanks a lot for any advice,

Adrian

Until recently I'd have said get the TSI deffo, better fuel economy and no cam belt to change. But there do seem to have been a lot of posts recently about big problems on the TSI.

You'll need to have a read around for yourself and see how you feel about TSI reliability Vs TFSI.

I doubt the new model will make much difference to the Mk2 prices. There won't be that many around for a while and they're likely to be priced quite high at least to start with. The non-FL Mk2s will have gone through the worst of their depreciation by then anyway.

By big problems you mean the cam chain tensioner failing? I've been reading a bit about this, seems to be covered under warranty (at least in the USA) up to 50k miles. I'm gonna ask some dealership if this is also true in Europe.
