Kerbed Alloy - Repair or Replace?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

After 2 years of non kerbed alloys I totally misjudged a kerb whilst driving and kerbed the front left alloy most of the way round.

It's a black gigaro with the chrome lip all the way round.

Anybody had one of these refurbished?

Or is worth dropping £130 to get a new one?

And doing it again stu? Leave it or do it yourself loads of DIY kits available and apparently do an adequate job

How do you paint up to that curved edge evenly to retain the shiny lip?

Thanks for the advice Seb.

I think it would be very difficult DIY though without taking the tyre off.

You can mask around tyres, not too bad.I've refurbed wheels many times,no comment to make on that, the point I am making is that it would be very dificult to mask and get an even curvature to preserve the shiny edge. The factory must have a special template to do it. I suspect that the pro wheel refurb guys wouldn't attempt it.It's easy to refurb the wheels totally black, but that's not the point,is it?

I suppose if the mark was only 2/3 cm long you could bend narrow tape to give roughly the right shape, but if it's gone all around most of the edge, then difficult /impossible to get it looking right IMO.

Had some minor kerbings on two of my dark chromes today and have to say I'm impressed with the result.

If you look very closely you will notice a slight difference in finish as its had to be painted in a very bright silver as the lathed finish can't be replicated but you'd have to be a real stickler not to be happy with it.

However if I mullered a wheel to the point it'd probably need complete refinishing I think I'd be forced to buy a new wheel. Horses for courses I guess and depends on the severity of the damage.

Sorry meant to say "smart repaired"!
