Blackvue DR400G II - Polarizing filter test

Featured Replies

Hey everone, I wrote this test up on another site but thought I would copy and post it here as it might be useful for some one :)

On another note I have also added my own polarizing filter.

It was a total pikey job and I used one of the lenses from a pair of 3D glasses they give out in the cinema. I found the right way and angle to put the filter on the camera by looking through it myself and twisting until the reflections seemed to go away.

Below is a comparison of the difference, while not as dramatic as some other examples it’s defiantly improved and didn’t really cost me anything. I have loads of the 3D glasses at home so won’t miss one pair.

Here is a picture of it attached to the camera with electrical tape:

As you can see it’s much less conspicuous and probably wouldn’t notice it if you wasn’t looking for it. I’m hoping that the addition of the tape won’t cause a heating problem. Most of my trips are under 30 minutes long and I am not planning on using the parking mode either.

Here is a link to a clip recorded using the filter. Had the brightness set a bit high but have reduced that in the settings now. Does anyone think the focus seems a bit off? Don’t really want to try dismantling the camera unless I could get a drastic improvement.

I’ll go out later on and get a clip of it recording in the dark to see how much the filter has affected its night time abilities. I’m currently recording with a bit rate of 10000000 set in the avserver.sh file so double the standard bit rate of the 1.010E firmware.

Cheers

Okay just taken a quick night time video and I think that it is way too dark to be able to justify the improvements the filter makes during the day

What's your opinion? I think ill leave it on for a day or two and see how it goes but it will probably be coming off. The brightness in the above video was set to 3/5 in the Blackvue setting.

Ive bumped it up to 4/5 for now but think this is going to be too high for day time recording

EDIT: I have decided to remove the filter, the improvements in daytime recording just don't justify the lack of night time visibility

A side by side comparison (filter left, no filter right) can be seen here

While you can see more reflections on the right the image is much brighter

Here is the video with the filter removed:

There we go :)

What are your opinions on this? Dont forget to switch to 1080p on the youtube!

That reply got me worried for a second then! Ive had a look through and none of the videos show speeding, the faster road is a 60mph limit that goes down to a 50mph and the estate at the begining is a 30mph limit.

You have to put your foot down when turning right as there is a corner just before and people come flying around there risking the chance of being rear ended, it happens frequently!

That will teach me to view it on here (looked like a 40)

(Above post removed)

Not overly impressed TBH as it is IMO still too dark at night,

nice idea though.

It's okay, im glad you mentioned it just incase it was a 40 zone!

I quite liked the addition of the filter in the day but as you said it was no good at night, the camera without the filter just being bright enough. I don't do much night driving but still don't fancy taking the risk of something not showing up.
