iPhone ODB-II tools

Featured Replies

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but since it is not VCDS I did not want to post in that forum.

What I am trying to do is to use my iPhone to display and record certain parameters of the engine while running using ODB-II protocol output, display some of them on the phone and be able to change ECU parameters (like door locking etc)

I want to do it wirelessly and use my iPhone/iPad to achieve this.

Here is what I think is the best I managed to find.

From Palmer Performance Engineering

Then the interface form fleebay

There is plenty of others but I got an e-mail from people selling this one and they claim it is compatible with iPhone (not all are) but they have not tested it with the Dashcommander. Price wise seems to be very attractive.

Few Questions:

1. Has anybody had any experience with the software and wireless ODB-II interfaces?

2. Does the Dashboard have similar functionality to VCDS i.e. read and change ECU data?

What Are your thoughts?

Why? If it is BT then any BT kit should be able to use it, including laptops as well. Thing is that I understand that not all BT devices are compatible with iOS devices on hardware level or something like that.

I'll be honest, I doubt you will be able to change parameters on the car without VCDS or the like. An iPhone/Android program more than likely won't be able to do it.

I have Torque Pro, brilliant app on my Samsung Galaxy S2, naybe worth buying a cheap android tab and BT dongle to get the gauges and logging.

For the iPhone to communicate with OBD you need a wi-fi dongle, Bluetooth is not supported!

I've got Rev and dash command, both are ok, they are very temperamental some times it connects sometimes it doesn't, it's good for clearing fault codes bit they don't support most values you want to see anyway lol, you need VCDS, and with what you've got planned it will be a worthwhile investment!

That's the thing..., buy more stuff :) I would like to use what I have with a minimum expenditure to achieve the results I want. For the time being I'd like to stay with iOS. I will write to Plamers tomorrow to ask about it.

Well, on Palmers website you can buy both WiF and BT ODB-II adapters which will work on iPhone/iPad no problem. They sell it as fully compatible. Does Dashcommand connects using WiFi in your setup?

Here's the features comparison

And here the hardware

http://www.palmerperformance.com/hardware/index.php

But you are right, there is plenty more WiFi.

There's at least one which uses BT so it looks like it does work?

What do you think?

I am not the biggest of tweakers and I'd be more interested in logging than changing any variables thorough VCDS. If I wanted to have it mapped Iwill drive to APR and pay them to do it. Small things like doors locking etc - that's what the meets are for ;)

I just don't think, currently, the is any mobile app that will allow more modification to be done (door locks, unlocking beep etc). The program's are very limited.

IIRC Ross Tech are currently working on a VCDS app for iOS

Yes, I read something on it in the diagnostics section but they are saying it will be even more expensive...

Maybe if I buy another VAG it will make more sense...

That's the first Bluetooth device I've seen advertised for the iPhone. When I got mine it was only wifi compatible, I know that the cheap Bluetooth connectors such as elm327 Bluetooth don't work, them advertised on palmer are specific iPhone compatible and will be expensive.

I have this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WiFi-OBD2-OBDII-Wireless-Car-Diagnostic-Scanner-Code-Reader-Tool-For-iPad-iPhone-/130781574101?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item1e733073d5

But as I mentioned VCDS is your best bet, it's by far the best for data logging and has access to parameters that others can't. Keep ur eye on eBay for genuine Ross tech cables, you will pick one up for under £200 and when you come to sell will get that back!
