Do all the usual checks you would on any car of a similar age. Bear in mind being a racey engine it may have been given a good thrashing in its life, so check clutch for clutch slip and gear selection, listen for excessive turbo whine, you should hear it whistle but should not be overly loud.

Look at the service history is it on fixed or variable service (I don't think one is any better than the other) unless the car has only ever done lots of short journeys then fixed would be best I reckon).

Brakes ought to have plenty of disc and pad left after 30K, if not you know it has seen some action - check that the discs are nice n shiny after initial rust has been removed during your test drive, they should not be heavily pitted or corroded. Suspension should not be making noises nor should the steering on full lock.

You will find the engine to be quite noisey from cold but once warm should sound reasonable refined at idle. An you should not be burning oil at the exhaust end either.

Bodywork should be checked for excessive stone chips - paint tends to be quite soft on Skodas. Check your windscreen too.

Check air con works nicely and so does all the other electrics including heated door mirrors.

Finally being a particularly silly choice of interior colour, door cards, carpets and seats can get dirty quickly so if these are all clean the car has been looked after. You will probably find wear on the drivers seat silver fabric where it meets the leather. Most Octy vRSs suffer this fate.

Hope this helps

I agree , I've just bought a 2001 VRS and had looked at newer cars 02 & 03 with 30-40 k on them and some of the interior's looked like the car's were ten years old, I bought my 2001 after weighing up the pro's and cons of an older car in better condition or a newer car in poor condition . my advice would be to try and buy one from a Briskodian ,The car I eventually bought had belonged to a member although he had traded it into a garage it was in far better condition than any I had seen at the dealers
