Winter Tyre Sizes

Featured Replies

I bought 4 16" steel wheels with my 4x4 elegance monster and was thinking of putting winter tyres on them for this winter. Knowing bugger all about tyres I was looking at putting 215/60 R16's Dunlop SP Winter Sports on them. I presume these will do the job over the winter ??

Yes and being 215/60 R16 they should by default have a load index higher then 94 required for the 4x4.

Oh are the steel rims 6Jx16 ET 50 or 7Jx16 ET45; should be stamped on the mounting face of the rim.

Really need the 7J for the 215 tyre but some dealers are a bit cheeky and sell you the 6J, which is notably more expensive being an Audi part. For these rims you should be looking at 205/55 R16 94H or V tyres.

Sure they are the 7J as james added them to my order when I forst got the car a couple of years ago but I thought that as I needed 2 front tyres now it was pointless putting 2 summer tyres on when I had a set of 16" steels in the garage. Would rather have a set of winter tyres I can keep changing, then just get 2 new summer tyres when I swap them back if it ever gets warmer again !

Yup 7J Et45 16" steels

I would seriously consider taking a look at the hankook w310 - it's well liked by a number of people on here. I have been running these for almost a month and although its not been icy just yet. On very wet roads they seem to shift a huge amount of water. I have found them to be very quiet. Like you I am running on 16" rims and I got them for about £90 each fitted.

Can also recommend Continental WinterContact TS830 & TS810 tyres. Impressed with both.

I'm using dunlop SP winter sports on my yeti, (admittedly on Spitzbergs)would have no problem recommending them.

Too late got my dunlop boots ordered ! Their reviews were very good from 6 different sites so went with them.

Plumber, a question - when I swap them over from my normal 17s, I guess I will have to reset the trye pressure monitor or it will think sommats going on ?

Yes you should reset the TPM otherwise it may bong, although it may take it a while to twig something is different. Often forget to reset myself and this happened recently when I switched our Fabia with TPM from 16" to 15" rims; didn't bong until 10 miles later :giggle:

Our new Fabia we have on order has scary 17" rims (come on SUK seriously 17" alloys on a Fabia, bad enough on a Yeti  ) which will have to get switched to 15" winters :smirk:

I presume I just press to reset once the new wheels have been fitted ? I havent even read up on the tyre pressure button TBH, lazy I know !

Wow that will seem quite a change from a 17" to a 15" unless you have them done before you drive it lol ! 17" on a Fabia seems odd anyway ?

Need power so turn the key (must be stationary though); press the TPM switch until it bongs, then it will take a calibration next time you move off and hold this in it's memory. If any tyre falls below the calibration after a short while it will bong.

Re the Fabia, daft as it sounds 17" rims with 205/40 tyres are near as dammit the same diameter/circumference as 15" rims with 195/55 tyres; only the latter is more comfortable a ride by far. Solid tyres are not far removed from the black bands which SUK saw fit to make standard for the Monte Carlo over here, elsewhere you can get 16" rims but as we know someone in that organisation thinks we all want the pimp my ride look
