Power Steering - Poss fault

Featured Replies

Anyone found that if reversing into a car parking space, so driving slow when turning the steering wheel sometimes it goes hard as if something is stopping the wheel turning and then it goes back to normal meaning I can continue turning the wheel?

Its like the power steering stops working for like a second or so then kicks back in.

Not checked for fault codes yet.

To add to this - If you turn the steering wheel fast sometimes it does it. Its like the power steering cant keep up with the speed of the turn cycle.

Sound like it could be steering sensor.

Do you have VCDS? You can log the info from the sensor and if it jumps around a lot then the sensor is dodgy and so is confusing the pump into kicking in and out.#

Could also be low fluid level but not sure if this would cause the light to come on too.

Or poor battery or alternator or the alternator pulley

Alternator Pully has been replaced. Battery seems fine - Starts the car straight up :)

If it's the battery or associated connections then you would get a warning light usually. If the pump cannot draw the power it needs then it trips it out and puts the light on.

Get the steering angle sensor checked out with some diagnostic equipment.

It definitely isn't normal what you describe. The assistance should be constant while you are turning the wheel and the pump ramps up/down according to the required load to compensate for extra effort required etc.
