A definitive answer? Clutch SMF DMF?

Featured Replies

73,000 Miles BLT engined fabia vRS, Awesome remap approx 170bhp 300 - 350 NM

Flywheel is shuddering like mad under load,

Clutch is not yet slipping but it can be difficult to engage 1st gear without pushing the pedal right into the carpet.

I am not chasing anymore power and I do want the setup to last.

I am aware of the euro car parts 25% discount and the best price I have found is £341.90 inc vat for the Sachs Kit with DMF

I have read lots of horror stories of the SMF wrecking the rest of the transmission who has experienced this?

Should I stick with the devi lI know and stay with the OEM setup.

I do enjoy a blast aroung country roads now and again but I also have to sit in traffic for around 40 minutes a day.

I know this has been covered on here a few times but there are many answers and many different fabias with different power outputs.

Links and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

First of all, with regards to SMF 'horror stories' iv head people talk about them but never actually spoken to anyone who's gearbox giving up due to the SMF. No doubt there is some thoery behind the scaremongering, but iv been running mine a couple of years now, my mates had his on his SE for years & '000 of miles with no issues either. These are just 2 of many setups I know without issues.

With regards to your question, a decent stock clutch will be find for your setup. Unless you decide you want more power there is no need for anything stronger.

Most of these stories that say the Gearbox/Transmission can get wrecked come from people who have heard it from other people, but never have I heard one come from an end user who has actually faced this issue. So, I guess we can put this theory to rest for the time being.

I have been driving my SMF for almost 2 years now and enjoy every bit of it, albeit, the noise level has slightly increased in the Cabin. So, be prepared for this increase in sound if you plan to go in for a SMF.

i have only heard horror stories of dmf's wrecking boxes when they fail :S

I have SEEN (not just heard) of several DMFs putting holes in the gearbox casing etc when they go.. sometimes cause the engine to lock up with the amount of **** that comes out of them when they fail!!.. thats on standard non mapped cars aswell lol..

..That said for the power your running and the amount of time ull be sat in traffic +1 on what matt said.. new dual mass + uprated clutch will be fine for ur settup..

The cases where the dual mass has caused damage to the box were mainly lease cars where the drivers didnt own the car and just kept driving it juddering till destruction ;)

Horror stories are false, they come from "my friend has a mate that used to own a fabia and he was a member of a forum where once he read of someone" nonsense.

But it depends if you want clatter or not, on the 6 speed boxes its hard to find a kit that won't make the cla ttery noise.

mine has a SMF it doesn't chatter on idle! valeo SMF (Y) the only noise i get is when you give it some, and then it cuts out. its like at the most torque bit of the gear, then it silence's out. best choice in clutch i coulda made! DMF suck. if your flywheel goes you could be looking at gear box recon as well as the clutch and flywheel kit! :/

If you are worried about the torque spikes etc getting to the gearbox from the SMF then go DMF.

Personally this would be a real worry for me knowing that these gearboxes are made of cheese or chocolate.

Seen a lot of failed gearboxes and experienced the same myself. Resulting in a recon box being needed and a new clutch and DMF.

If it's just the occasional blast you like but most of the time want it as a daily driver then maybe you don't need an SMF.
