Fitting coilovers, when do I get car alligned?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

FK Highsports arrived today  . Look to be good quality and included new drop links, which is always nice!

I have new top mounts front and rear, wondering should I let the suspension bed in before getting it alligned at a garage. At the minute tyres are wearing perfectly even so I believe everything to be generally in the right position :giggle: .

Also any unusual tips or tricks for fitting? I'm fairly sure I know what I'm at but any suggestions are welcome.

What should I protect them with? silicone spray, something heavier? I got a spray with them but it looks quite light, especially now that the roads are being gritted for winter.

That's enough questions for now!

Thanks,

Michael

Wheel alignment should be straight after fitting and I'd cover the threads with copper grease personally

Settling new springs takes about 10 miles (been there, done that...)

So basically get your drop sorted all round, then get a full geometry because you'll have changed the camber and castor at the front as well as possibly altering the front toe angle (I think this may change correctly on a lowered Octy because they do not suffer from bump steer {steering angle change with suspension movement, a different thing from kick-back which lots of people mistakenly think is bump-steer}).

cheers!

@Porkballs. Is that effectively doing the same job as a flat screwdriver being turned?

obviously much more heavy duty but just spreads the seat on the hub yeah?

If so I'll make one of them up alright, cheers!

I'll use copper grease too then.

cooper grease or better silicone grease...the whole idea is normal grease is washable,so after a while it will vanish.

Yeah, was thinking that. In Ireland the roads are crap for having standing water so it would be washed off in no time.

cheers!

Yes mate exactly the same. It makes it so much easier when you use one.

swan neck or crows feet spanner for the top nut, or air/impact gun, makes life so much easier, hub splitter too, literally does just that, acts as a cam, and splits the hub enough for the shock to release. Use copper slip when putting back in to aid removal again if required. Just take it for alignment after, full 4 wheel pref!

I put copper grease on the threads then run the adjuster up and down over it to grease up the adjuster ring
