Steering problems (STRANGE ONE)

Featured Replies

Hi all. I brought a skoda Fabia 2 and i have had absolutley no problems with it up to today, I went down the tescos and jumped in the car and reversed the car out. The car would then only turn right. you can bring the wheels straght again but and move it right with no hassle what so ever but when you move it from the central possition to move left it just locks and will not move. I have tried it with the igniton off as well but what ever you try and do it will not move left. Both the wheels move right with out a problem.. I took the track rod ends off the wheels and i get the same thing.. I have had a long chat with skoda and all the say is its the rack and want £800 for the rack with out fitting i am a macanic so could fit one but this has me totally baffled as i would of thought if the ignotion was off and the track rod ends where off the wheel would turn without a problem and move but it does not seem to be that way.

Any ideas would be gratfull recieved or any problems you had had there are no lights on the dash or anything so i am really stumped as i was told there was a steering fault light

so even the ECU does not think there is a fault..

you checked there is no mechanical things "lodged" in the suspension by some hillarious joker? Could it be steering wheel lock mechanism going bonkers? Just guessing here...

Trust me it has me baffled totally. I have checked the rack but it was on the car and could not see anything lodged in there at all or anything. I was thinking steering lock someone did say remove the ignotion barrel and see what that does. but my local dealer said to come on here and see what people think as they want £260 just to take it down there.. and then they would just replace rack and collom first to see if that makes a difference..

If you are a mechanic I'd spent a good time looking myself first. It is easy to start changing parts hoping that one of such changes down the line would fix the problem - hardly cost effective route me thinks!

Does it make any noises, like electrical steering servo straining?

Does it "clunk" against something "hard" or is it "rubbery" type of resistance?

I am asking as I had an instance where rubber joint boot got somehow trapped and prevented steering wheel from full lock turn...

Thinking about it if it was something mechanical in the stering column then you'd feel a slight vibration when such obstacle was being hit...

maybe servo motor doesn't get voltage to reverse the polarity and make to motor turn the other way?

Yeah i agree with you there. Just did not want to pull it apart and then discover its a easy problem to sort out like a sensor some where etc. Like the astra has a sensor for left and right and if one of them is faulty the steering wheel will not move at all and just stay locked as the pump causes a hydrolic lock. well anyway.

It makes no nosie at all, its a STOP as in a clunk as like your on full lock

I have tried even with the ignition off and engine not running and wheels are off the floor to see if that makes a differeance and it did not...

So a bit lost to be honest..

and not sure where to do or what to do without starting to stip it down..

Hi all went out today and replace the rack. checked it moved both ways not a problem and low and behold did the same thing when i started the car.. Does anyone have any ideas can the pump do this !!! i would to thought that when the engine is off and ignition that would sort the problem. The steering wheels goes round ok with no problems at all. so i know its not that !!!! cause my D1ck head mate who was with me span it round and round and yes he has broke the ribbon inside for the airbag.. AHHHH but the main problem is the fact that it still does not turn left..

Any more ideas.

Have you checked all the electrics inc all the sensors?

What sensors are you talking about there is one that is on the rack that one came with the new rack. so it cant be that one

are there more I have disconnected the pipe thats held in by the 19mm nut in the hope that it would cancel the power steering and work with out it but does not seem to make a difference

anyone got any ideas how to release all the fulid in the hope i could use it with out power steering...

Sorry mate, it is beyond me now ...

I thought you said there are no mechanical problems as you checked so eletrics are the only thing left?
