From Yeti to Superb.....

Featured Replies

As some of you will know about 4 weeks ago we made the decision to change from what I can only describe as a fantastic car (Yeti) to a bit more luxurious Superb Combi SE..... well after 4 weeks and 500 miles in the Superb I can say the difference between the two cars is enormous, talk about Chalk and cheese!

the Yeti = Fun, easy to get in and out of a pleasure to drive and great around town....mpg around 42 most days and sometimes as much as 52 but hit the magic 70 and the brick shape starts to drag the mpg down.... easy to park and you can get 5 adults inside.

The Yeti Handles very well, is comfortable and quite quiet on the right roads.

It also will hold a surprising amount in the back especially with the rear seats removed.

The Superb.....it just wont let you behave like a hoon...don't get me wrong it handles and rides beautifully ...but the harder you try to drive it in a spirited manner the more it makes it awkward...it just isn't that sort of car  ...and parking....yes parking..it does need a FULL parking bay and I am slowly getting used to the size and so far no problems, in fact it no longer seems as large as an aircraft carrier anymore...mpg not completely sure yet as the engine and gearbox are still very tight but on the motorway coming back from Wales it was doing a very respectable 49mpg ...around town and local trips 39 to 40...so hoping that will get a little better.

We tried to get 5 adults in it and my son (6 footer) couldn't get in the middle back seat...his head was touching the roof  so we had to do a bit of swapping around and found the Superb isn't as wide as the Yeti...but are adapting to that...Now....getting in and out is awkward it is an awful lot lower than the Yeti and believe it or not lower than my sons FL Octavia which was a surprise.

On the road the Superb is QUIET, comfortable and it even makes the yeti suspension seem harsh in comparison.

The boot.....has an echo echo echo ....if you put something in there and it slides forward ...well you can't reach it and you have to mount an expedition to find it...not had to put the rear seats down yet for some reason

It took a while to decide if the Superb needed a name ..the Yeti was easy it already came named from Allams ..so Elsie it was...but what do you call a Regency green Lady in the form of a Superb ...took a bit of thinking about but somehow Victoria seems to fit

So what to do now.....the 140 seems to have a fair bit of power so I may put off a remap until a good group buy comes along...also thinking that a rear ARB from Whiteline or Neuspeed may help sharpen things up a bit...in the meantime still trying to catch up and figure out all the toys, Phone, cornering lights, coming home and leaving lights, sensor wipers etc. etc and all on an SE.

After I have put a couple of thousand miles on her I'll try and add to this.. as some one has already said .."welcome to the serene world of the Skoda Superb"

Nice comparison. :)

What spec was your Yeti though as the toys you mention on your post are standard fit on a lot of them? I agree that the damping is that bit better judged on the Superb but still think the Yeti's is pretty much best in class for getting the balance of handling and comfort. Im quite a fan of the Superb myself. :)

My Yeti was an SE as well ..and to be honest I loved it to bits...just that an offer to good to refuse came up for the Superb...both cars are VERY good but so totally different

Nice write up, glad you are enjoying it.

You're right, the Superb is no hot hatch and handling is a little wayward at times, built for comfort not for speed. It makes a fantastic cruiser, I love just sitting back with the cruise control on without having to "drive" it much. I'm more than happy with it, although given it's size, internal legroom, boot space, it could do with being a tad wider, just so it can accommodate 3 adults across the back. Perhaps the Mk3 facelift will address that?

How many miles has yours done? My engine and gearbox was very tight to begin with (from new) only returning 40mpg, but literally overnight around 12,500 miles it dropped and loosened up nicely. We have the same spec and engine, so you could compare against my MPG figures below (signature), now in excess of 30k miles.

Only just got to 500 miles so a long way to go yet

Nice comparison.

I personally have not noticed an improvement in fuel consumption (now on 27K miles) don’t go by the MFD consumption though as they do tend to be a bit optimistic.

I sat in a Superb SE at Preston Motors the other day and Ihave to say that even in SE spec it seemed like a very nice car.

The seats were great, better than the Yeti SE seats by some way.

Glad I have an Elegance Yeti with the electric seat option or I may have been having 2nd thoughts... :D

Trouble is so far I haven't found a way of driving it in a spirited manner ...it just won't let you  ...I'm going to see if I can educate it but it could take a while
