'08 DSG on 1.9 Tdi. Any issues to be wary of?

Featured Replies

Just looking around for a replacement car for my father and trying to convince him that Skoda is the way forward!

He wants an automatic and is coming from a Nissan with CV gearbox. He's also heard about issues with Skoda DSG boxes being expensive to maintain.

I know there are some types that were problematic, but don't know which ones.

I've seen a 2008 Octavia 1.9 TDi PD Elegance DSG and know the 1.9 is pretty bomb proof (its got 67k on the clock) but what about the 6 speed DSG box fitted to this model?

I've got a 2.0 PD 140 '07 so am familiar with the car and diesel, but not 100% on the engine and not familiar with DSG at all so any advice on these would be much appreciated.

Should add its for sale at a dealer, 1 previous owner and looks pretty tidy, but I've not started it or driven it yet.

ive had a 1.9 tdi dsg for 4yrs now with no probblems just check its had a dsg oil change at 40.000 miles and sevice history,

Will do. How much does the gearbox oil change cost?

I've heard that these 'wet' gearboxes cost c.£1000 to service whereas the 'dry' gearboxes (7 speed?) are significantly cheaper to maintain.

What are the pros & cons of 6 or 7 speed boxes?

What horse power would this engine have?

All the 1.9 tdi's fitted to the octy were 105 bhp with 184 lbs/ft torque i think. I'm sure someone will be able to confirm or deny this.

Correct.

The only extra maintenance requirements of a 6 speed DSG are a gearbox oil change every 40,000 miles. Not really a DIY job (although it can be done), It typically costs about £150 - £170 at an independent....a little more at the dealer.

Thanks people. Not as bad as I'd been led to believe.

Does the 7 speed box need an oil change or is it 'dry'?

Which is the better gearbox?

Just found part of the answer in another thread. The 7 speed is dry but isn't suited to torquey or high powered engines.

Which is better though? Or is it personal preference (like tyres)?

I've driven both recently - the 7-speed DSG in the dealers 1.2 Tsi Octavia courtesy car and the 6-speed DSG as fitted to my CR vRS and the difference was quite big, the 7-speed seemed very relaxed and tuned for economy and minimum revs as well as being easily confused when calling for more power.

That said the difference in engines is like chalk & cheese so probably not the best comparison. The best option would be for him to take it out for a decent test drive to see if he likes it or not. The DSG in the vRS sold the gearbox to me - if I'd have tried the DSG as fitted to the courtesy car then I'd have run mile!

6spd DSG is around £120-£150 to service and it is every 40k.

Thank you for this. Anyone know what the costs of servicing the 7 speed box are?

Agreed, but its getting him to look at options beyond Nissan is a sticking point that I'm trying to overcome with some answers to his objections.

£0

They are a maintenance free box.
