Rattle

Featured Replies

At 2000 rpm I have a slight rattle/knocking noise from the engine. It sounds to me that something has come loose but no idea what!

Performance is fine, been to skoda for a 'quick drive' and they say it could be rotary. They want to charge me £55 per half hour investigation - could take upto an hour. Despite me having skoda extended warranty this is still chargeable!

Any idea's?

Have you had any recent work on it.

I take it you have had a look under the bonnet? Is the engine cover properly seated, mine rattles loose every so often and it took me a while to figure out what it was

No work done, and engine cover seems ok.

When I put my foot down the noise disappears. It happens if I'm driving around the 2000rpm mark. It is more noticeable when going around a bend/roundabout.

Heard two clunks as if something had fallen off earlier today. This is annoying as the car drives ok.

I've looked around but can't see anything loose. Problem is there is no noise when running idle or revved to 2000rpm when still.

Had any work done recently? Is it maybe a nut or scewdriver or something thats fallen down in the engine bay somewhere thats rattling and moving about when you are driving?

Cheers

Dave

Does it sound like cracking a nut and is more evident when you reverse or take turn ??

The rattle is louder on a bend/roundabout. The sound is almost like a rotary sound, as if something is vibrating.

The clunk was quite loud. At first I thought my exhaust had fallen off!

Not had any work done recently.

Daft thing to say but have a check of the lower engine mount bolt on the drivers side. You can just about see it from the front drivers side wheel arch if you stick your head under the car a bit with the wheels on full left steering lock. It maynot be this but I have had mine work loose on one occasion and it was a rattle at about those revs sounding as if it was coming from behind the instrument binnacle and was more noticeable when turning...

Thanks skomaz for that but did what you said and the bolts seem tight enough.

Think I'm going to take it in to an Indy garage and not the dealer just because of the diagnostic charges fish bros are trying to make me pay. It is due its mot in jan so can hopefully book both in at the same time.

In the dealer at the moment. They reckon it might be the fly wheel - I say reckon as they haven't a clue. Guessing this won't be covered by the warranty...

Picked the car up, turns out the oil level was low. They had to put 3 litres in! Oops! I usually check the oil level quite frequently but due to personal reasons it had totally slipped my mind.

Live and learn I guess.

engine oil or transmission oil ?

Gulp.

So the noise was knock from big end bearings due to intermittent oil starvation?

Have you thought about an emergency trade in for another car!

Ha ha no. Worst thing about it was I had oil in the boot!! They never charged me.

Was engine oil they replaced.
