Why is modifying so addictive ?

Featured Replies

Having spent years putting 15K+ in modifications on my 'dry weather car' I bought the VRS with the hope that I could and would keep it standard. I've only had it a week and I thought the essential purchases would be my limit ( boot liner, rubber mats ) all aimed at making it more practical for work use.

Since then I've ordered a stubby aeriel, climatronic dial surrounds, vrs gearknob insert, led interior lights and an alloy oil cap. I know these are minor 'tweaks', but I'm already creating a wish list for a new headunit, new alloys, stage 1 and carbon intake. Why is modding so addictive ???

Who else has this mental illness ? and if so, other than a wife and lack of funds, what has helped hold back the mods ? or shall I just embrace it and spend on

I just know from experience that I'll never get my investment back

Me Me I do I do

Financial ruination here i come

Good tip, one thing at a time, set a date for it, fit it, then wait til bored and repeat. Spreads the expense and prolongs the joy of the car.

Ignore the wife, in no scenario will she ever be happy, im sure mine would find a way to be unhappy if i spent all my time and money on her

For me it's a case of 'personalising', if I like it and don't have it then I get it, but spending is modest.

I know the feeling, if I add up all the money I have spent modifying cars and building Rally cars I would be able to be driving a Ferrari now. I have never had a standard car for longer than a week in 27 years of driving!!!

At my age I should know better but still can't stop it!!!

I sold my modified Vectra C SRi approximately 1.5 months ago.

Said to myself I need a sensible car.

Bought an Octavia VRS, within 2 weeks of having the car:

Lowered 35mm on H&R springs.

Custom 2.5" cat back exhaust.

Angel tuning remap.

So much for a sensible standard car! I suppose if it's in your blood, it's in your blood!

My dad is 57; he drives a highly modified EP3 Type-R.

We don't stand a chance!

is there a support group for us?

I thought this WAS the support group :wonder:

OP - yep, i'm 100% afflicted with that addiction - can't resist whatever the car is. Even when I got a cheap snotter a few years back to keep the miles off my lotus in the winter, it ended up getting a brake and suspension upgrade

the best cars ive ever owned were the ones i was intending to use as hacks.

The rusty appeal and odd wheels had a certain euro rat appeal, and i followed through on it too, best one was a hillman imp. Big chrome rears, small steel fronts. Ended up getting it restored in white with black vinyl stripes and rally converting it. Bought it for buttons for a bit of fun and then to the scrap yard. but no

I'm the same! Buy a car, spend thousands on it trying to perfect it then sell it! Then do it all over again. All within a few months. Drives me and the wife mad but I can't help it. Could be quite a rich man by now.

And it's started all over again, just bought an octavia vRS less than a week ago saying its staying standard and its already booked in for a remap and lowering springs to be fitted.

I've done it for years and to be honest i won't stop either! Secretly I enjoy it! :)
