Just back from my Christmas Cologne trip in my Yeti

Featured Replies

Hey - just arrived back from a week in Cologne in my Yeti Urban.

Was very pleased with everything, and the car performed brilliantly. I had snow tyres fitted, and snow chains in the boot - and there was a fair bit of snow around, temperatures around -12 degrees.

five people, luggage, presents and wine all fitted in nicely!

Very pleased

:)

Very nice., considering doing a trip there this coming weekend for a couple of nights, just to catch the last night of the Christmas markets - interesting to note they have some snow too. :-) Any trip photos? :-)

Hi,

I'm heading off skiing in mid Feb in a new Yeti 1.4TSI with 225/50 17 inch standard factory fit wheels. I'm getting alarmed by a few threads about it being impossible to fit snow chains to these wheels. Allams, my local showroom cannot advise (remarkably). Can anyone help a new Yetite please?

See page 193 of the owners manual, where it says snow chains can only be fitted to the rear wheels with your size tyres.

Ooops - thanks. That's an issue then. Sorry to be a complete naive, but can you fit most sizes of tyres to the 17inch wheels? .

No. A specific rim width has a small range of tyre widths that can be safely fitted to it. Skoda specify what can be fitted and I thought listed the approved sizes in the Handbook, but they are certainly in the Tyre & Wheel thread in the Tech section.

Fitting narrow tyres to wide rims make you look like a "Barry Boy"

Sorry Graham, what's a 'Barry boy'??

Or more to the point, the narrower the tyre on the standard rim the more likely you are to kerb your alloys at some point.

A set of 16" cold weather tyres on steel wheels is the answer - then you can add chains if required without risk of damage to bodywork, or alloy wheels.

But according to the handbook you can only fit chains to the front wheels if the tyres are 205/55

Correct, and those tyres will not correctly fit onto the standard 17" wheels, so you need to fit a narrower rim, which typically is the 16" one.

Have been in Cologne Cathedral, awesome.... :happy:Cologne%20Cathedral.jpg
