rain sensing wipers - can I bypass them?

Featured Replies

Hi.

Maybe its because my car is onto its third windscreen and the sensor hasd become damaged, but my auto sensing wipers are useless now. Not wiping at all when its pelting with rain or wiping like the clappers when its only light drizzle.

Is there a way to revert them to manual intermittent by removing the fuse for the sensor or something? Does the sensor have its own fuse? Its becoming dangerous so if I cant bypass the auto sensor I will have to look at getting the sensor replaced or something.

the sensor is in the glass so that would be new as well, have you been spraying something on the screen.

Mine do this whenever they get waxed by a helpful person. I scrape it off the area over the sensor and it goes back to normal. Id recommend giving the glass there a good clean as a start.

You can also just move the wipers up one more notch then they stay on all the time.

I was actually quite relieved when I realised that my Blackline did not have rain sensitive wipers fitted. I've had two VAG cars (VW Passat & Audi A6) with them fitted and they were both more trouble than they were worth. The only car that they seemed to work well on was my BMW - maybe because they were quite insensitive and didn't wipe that often - just how I have them set normally!

It would be interesting to see if there is a way to disconnect the sensitivity & just revert back to normal intermittent for future reference though.

just remove the connection from the back of the sensor then you will have manual wipers.

Manual wipers, which work in position 1 or 2 yes but intermittent no. I recall someone finding a way to disable the auto wipers in VCDS, but not a way to enable intermittent as its a different controller. Why not sort the sensor, if the windscreen replacement company broke it then they should replace it. IIRC the sensor is part of the module that's stuck to the glass and not part of the screen at all.

The sensor is in the back of the rear view mirror, so I guess when the screens have been replaced it needs to be removed from the glass then stuck on again with the mirror.

Screen was done by autoglass both times. Last one was around September. I guess it would be difficult to prove that they are at fault now.

Ive not used anything on the glass (no rainex etc) just normal washing. I'll have a look at this weekend. Might get a price from the dealer to replace it (yikes!)

Trying not to spend too much as I think I am going to change the car once winter is out of the way.

take it back to autoglass or phone them ask them to have a look for you i have always found them really helpfull.they are used to taking these bits of it wont take them long to have a look.

Thanks Bill. I'll dig out the receipt and give them a call. Cant hurt to ask :)

Asked this question years ago on here and everyone came back saying you couldn't change the auto wipers to normal old fashioned intermittant on the pre-fl at least.

Sensor is part of the windscreen as I had to have my windscreen replaced recently. I've had no issues with mine...can adjust the sensitivity using the switch on the top of the wiper stock. Rain x doesn't affect the sensor either as mine is treated with it and still works fine.

take the trim of and slide the mirror downwards, towards the lower front of the windscreen.

Unplug the sensor and get it coded out if you don't want it

I have covered this before, the rain sensor can be desactivated using the vagcom

then the position will become intermitent

Yes Mike

When I tried this on mine the switch altered the timing for the passage of the blades.

I did find that the lowest interval timed passage was still too long, 4/5 seconds I think.

Well, that's a first. Get back to us all about this one Mike cos when I asked years ago everyone and their dog said it was impossible to change the control from autowipe via the sensor to good old fashioned intermittant with the timing of the sweeps controlled by the top of the stalk and nothing else.

Does it mean that the light sensor for tunnel mode is also knocked out if you do that alberg?

Yup, as I said, that was the general consensus on the pre-fl cars.

Cheers big fella. :)

Since I have the FL model I must see if CH/LH still work and try to make a small video of the intermittant

This video was done at night having the light switch on AUTO

The LH/CH lights still worked (may also work during daytime, meaning allways)

The longest passage is about 10 sec and the leastest passage about 4 seconds
